Lec# 1 (Separable Method)

The document discusses differential equations, which are equations containing derivatives of dependent variables with respect to independent variables. It defines ordinary differential equations as those containing derivatives of dependent variables with respect to a single independent variable. Partial differential equations involve derivatives of dependent variables with respect to two or more independent variables. The order of a differential equation is defined as the order of the highest derivative, and the degree is the degree of the highest order derivative. Examples are provided to illustrate order and degree. The document also provides an example of solving a first order differential equation with an initial condition and solving a given differential equation.

Differential Equations

2
Differential Equation
An equation containing the derivatives of one or more dependent
variables, with respect to one or more independent variables, is said to be
a differential equation (DE).
4
CLASSIFICATION BY TYPE
If an equation contains only ordinary derivatives of one or more dependent
variables with respect to a single independent variable it is said to be an
ordinary differential equation (ODE).

For example,

are ordinary differential equations.

An equation involving partial derivatives of one or more dependent variables of
two or more independent variables is called a partial differential equation (PDE).

For example,

, and

are partial differential equations.

6
Definition: The order of a differential equation is the order of the highest derivative
that occurs in the differential equation.

Definition: The degree of a differential equation is the degree of the highest order
derivative that appears in the differential equation.

7
For example

(i) Order 1, degree 1

(ii) Order 2, degree 1
(iii)Order 2, degree 2
(iv)Order 1, degree 1
(v) Order 2, degree 1
