CONTROL DATA CORPORATION’S HISTORY
CDC Was started in 8th July 1957
Founder of CDC- Mr. William Norris.
 The company initially was capitalized at $600,000.
The company assets was $2.6billion by 1986.
The company sales was $3.3 billion .
 CDC was recognized by BUNCH member.
The Primary business of CDC was computing
hardware ,peripheral equipment and computer
services.
It’s build the world’s first super computer.

CDC developed PLATO.(Non hardware area)
It was utilized in minicomputers for run the
software and for providing training and
educational programs.
Investment in PLATO is nearing $1 billion yet the
operation had never covered its costs.
In 1968, CDC purchased CCC to provide leasing
arrangement for purchase of large mainframe
systems.

Significant portion was sold in 1987.
Only 18.3% was given up with CCC.
In 1985- CDC posted records loss of
$567.5million on sales.
The peripheral products group was hit hard by
competition from Japan and lower margins per
unit.
Sales dropped 12 percent from the year before.

William Norris’s Vision

• According to Norris, Business was to address


society needs and unmet social needs
represented potential future markets
• he believed that the government should
provide incentives to encourage the private
sector to participate in social programs.
• In short, Norris strategy was to address society
needs as profitable business opportunities.

Larry Perlman’s Vision

• Perlman concentrated on high-performance, high


capacity end of the market and cut low end of
the market of floppy diskettes, computer tapes.
• he introduce just in time inventory practices.
• He was concerned to provides quality product to
the end consumer so they emphasizing on
statistical quality control.

Perlman was a small compact person.

Fair Break was started in 1977 primarily to aid
unemployed youths.
Norris had officially announce “PLATO is the
future of control data.
CDC expanded the use of PLATO in different
sectors and different types of organization.
Two related programs, Advanced Career
Employment Training and Career outreach , were
also set up.

City Venture Corporation
Its goal was nothing less than the revitalization
and renewal of rundown urban areas.
City venture was set up as a for –profit
corporation.
It worked in cooperative arrangements with
civic and religious groups , cities , states and
federal agencies.
To foster economic , educational and cultural
development in the affected area.

Rural Ventures Inc.
In 1979 , Rural Venture Inc. was established ,
an agriculture cooperative akin to city venture.
The goal of RVI was to increase the
productivity and profitability of family farms and
to improve the standard of living in farm
communities.
RVI was marginally effective.
Norris blamed RVI’s poor performance on the
government for its lack of support.
