CEO Module 3 - Civil Engineering Specializations

This document discusses the different specializations within civil engineering, including: [1] structural and solid mechanics; [2] waste treatment and environmental engineering; [3] transportation engineering; [4] geotechnical and soil mechanics; [5] hydraulics and water management; and [6] construction management. It provides examples of the types of projects each specialization works on. The goal is to name and describe the scope of each civil engineering discipline.

CEO Module 3 – Civil Engineering Specializations

This module aims to discuss the different specializations in civil engineering and the scope
of each specialization.

Learning Outcomes:

1. To name the specific disciplines in the field of Civil Engineering.

2. To give the scope of each specific field in civil engineering.
Lesson 1: The World of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a conglomerate of many specific disciplines.

1. Structural and Solid Mechanics

2. Waste Treatment and Environmental
3. Transportation
4. Geotechnical and Soil Mechanics
5. Hydraulics and Water management
6. Construction Management
Structural and Solid Mechanics – Structural Engineers design steel, concrete or timber structures
such as:

1. Bridges
2. Dams
3. Retaining Walls and Foundations
4. Buildings and Towers
5. Stadiums
Waste Treatment and Environmental - Wastewater Engineers are civil or environmental engineers
trained to design or analyze water treatment plants.

Categories of Water Treatment Plants

1. Sanitary waste treatment facilities

2. Industrial waste treatment facilities
3. Potable water treatment facilities
Transportation – Transportation Engineers design and analyze

1. Highways
2. Railways
3. Airports
4. Urban and Suburban Road Networks
5. Parking Lots
6. Traffic Control Signal System
Geotechnical and Soil Mechanics - Geotechnical engineers analyze the subterranean rock and soil to
determine its capability to support extreme loads. Proper geotechnical engineering is essential for a
safe and secure structure.

1. Tunnels

2. Deep foundation

3. Pipelines
Hydraulics and Water Management (Water Resource Engineering) – Water management involves the
use of hydrologic and hydraulic principles to design:

1. Drainage systems
2. Detention/retention ponds
3. Navigational waterways
4. Flood control levees, dams and dikes
Construction Management – Construction managers

1. Review contracts
2. Order materials
3. Hire and schedule subcontractors

The job of a construction manager is to provide quality control and ensure project is completed
on time and within budget.
