Basic Web Design Principles and Elements
• An effective web site designing requires more
than just gathering relevant information and
posting it on web. It is like a good research
presentation or paper that also demands as
much attention to the organization. The creator
should strive, clarity, it can quickly lose the
audience and without engagement, it will not
catch their attention in the first place.
Before you begin
1. Consider the audience and goals – it
should have a clear sense of who will be
using the site and what kind of experiences
are hoping to provide.
2. It is advisable to plan the site on paper
first – Draw a “family tree” of pages with
arrows that indicates the links or a
hierarchical outline. Either way, attempting
to implement the vision is essential.
Site Lay-Outing
1. Strive for consistency – The project must
have an identity, so all the pages in it should
have a common feel: consistency among
color schemes, backgrounds, tone of voice
and navigational tools.
Site Lay-Outing
2. Provide a rich set of links within the site –
There should be multiple ways for future
users to navigate the pages. Consider
including a highlighted links within textual
material to related information elsewhere on
the site, prominent ‘home’ link or icon on
each page and a menu or table of contents.
Site Lay-Outing
3. Don’t hide important information - Users
don’t like to click many times just to find the
certain information they want, try to make it
accessible up front if top left corner is the
most important.
Web Medium
1. Provide opportunities for interaction –
Interactivity can be innovative and
compelling in means of engaging the readers
and making experiences that can not be
duplicated in other media.
Web Medium
2. Avoid text-only pages – a user should not
see an entire screen full of uninterrupted text
in browsing your site. Take advantage of the
web’s medium.
Web Medium
3. Don’t sacrifice elegance – Every design
element of the site(images, animation,
colors) ought to correspond thematically
with the content and goals of the project.
Web Medium
4. Provide a link for every URL used in the
site – Make it hyperlinked so that the users
can go directly to the site.
The Front Door
1. Give a descriptive title of the site – The
title must convey the content of the site in a
brief but engaging manner which ideally
should pique the curiosity of users and eager
them to explore more of the pages.
The Front Door
2. Include a brief introduction – This must be
on the site’s home page which also explains
the scope and purpose of the site. The
introduction is the chance to heighten the
user’s interest and persuade them to stick
around and explore more.
The Front Door
3. Make the site’s home page as useful a
starting point as possible – Viewer should
be able to see at a glance how it is laid out,
what it is about, and what kinds of resources
and features it includes. Ideally, all of these
information should be visible on a single
fast-loading screen that requires a minimum
of scrolling.
Accessibility
1. Make sure the text used is legible – Check
the color, font, and size of all text in the site
to affirm that it can be easily read especially
on dark or fancy backgrounds that makes
text harder to read.
Accessibility
2. Make sure the site is platform
independent – Think about the bandwidth
and keep in mind that not all users will have
the luxury of an internet connection.
Minimize the memory requirements of the
site by compressing large files and images.
