DC-Surveyor - Mindset

The document discusses dimensional control and measurement techniques. It aims to ensure products conform to dimensional tolerances specified in engineering drawings. Dimensional control provides benefits to engineering processes, confidence in complex projects, and assurance to clients. Key aspects covered include the measurement purpose and components, various measurement methods and instruments, sources of error, and handling errors. The overall goal is to obtain accurate measurement data through established procedures.

TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT (TRAST) PROGRAM

THE MIND SET

THE MIND SET – Scope of Work

 The primary objective of Dimensional Control is to ensure

that the final product conforms to the required dimensional
tolerances, as indicated in the Specification Standards
document and Engineering drawings.

 Dimensional Control can give:

a) Benefits to an engineering process

b) Confidence to a complex project
c) Assurance to the Client

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Definition)

 Measurement is defined as the process of numerical

evaluation of a dimension or the process of comparison with
standard measuring instruments

 Need of Measurement:
 Establish standard
 Interchange ability
 Validate the design
 Physical parameter into meaningful number
 True dimension
 Customer Satisfaction
 Evaluate the Performance

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Purpose)

 The Measurement Purpose is to get The Data.

 Data, scientifically is always TRUE and can’t wrong.

 If data is not corresponded to drawing or other reference, so it’s

not the data that have to be corrected. That need to be rectified:
 Actual condition of the object
 Instrument that have been used
 Method that have been applied
 Parameter that have been used and
 Environmental circumstances

 Original Data taken need to be process supposed the required

information could be obtained.

 To get a valid data; Integrity, carefulness, and tactical steps are

needed.

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Methods)

 Direct method

 Indirect method
Volume = heights x widths x lengths

 Comparative method
 Ex: Comparators

 Coincidence method
 Measurements coincide with certain lines and signals

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Methods)

 Contact method
 Sensor/Measuring tip touch the surface area

 Deflection method
 The value to be measured is directly indicated by a deflection of
pointer. Ex: pressure measurement

 Complementary method
 The value of quantity to be measured is combined with known
value of the same quantity
Ex:Volume determination by liquid displacement

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Instrument)

 Instrument is important component of measurement.

 Each Instrument has particular characteristic (handling,

specialization and specification).
 Instrument Characteristic is known from the manufacturer
certificate and manual book of the instrument.
 It’s important to know the characteristic of each instrument,
so that we could give optimum result by choosing particular
instrument for particular job.
 It’s also required to maintain instrument on it’s top
performance with regular calibration (on site based and
manufacturer based)

THE MIND SET – Measurement (ERROR)
 Every measurement always have ERROR, even for the most
sophisticated instrument in the world and the most
experienced surveyor.
 ERROR is define as the deviation of measurement value (x)
against the true value (𝜏).

 Source of ERROR:
 HUMAN ERROR
 INSTRUMENT ERROR
 EXTREME ENVIRONMENT

 Type of ERROR:
 Random ERROR
 Systematic ERROR
 Gross ERROR / Blunder

THE MIND SET – Measurement (Reliability)

 Measurement Reliability is about :

1. Precision
2. Accuracy

 Precision is grade of measurement result that have minimum

variation among one to another. Involving random ERROR.
 Accuracy is grade of measurement result which approaches
the True Value. Involving systematic ERROR.

Precise but not Accurate Accurate but not Precise Precise and Accurate

THE MIND SET – Tolerance

 Tolerance is maximum allowable error in Measurement

 Tolerance is defined from:

 Instrument Technical Specifications
 Standardization of Quality
 Methodology
 Technical Engineering Calculation

 TRUE VALUE = MEASUREMENT VALUE ± TOLERANCE

TOLERANCE (-) ERROR
