Claims of Fact,

Most Essential Learning
Competency
-Formulate claims of fact,
value and policy.
Specific objective:
Identifying textual
details that affirm or
refute a claim.
What is a claim?

A claim asserts something.

A claim is not a question.
“A claim is a statement the
advocate believes or is in the
process of evaluating…”
(Henrick, 2015, p. 17)
A claim…
 persuades
 argues
 convinces
 proves
 provocatively suggests something to
a reader who may or may not
initially agree with you.
A claim can be substantiated with
research, evidence, testimony, and
academic reasoning.
A good claim is specific. It makes
a focused argument.
Types of Claims
1. Claim of fact
2. Claim of value
3. Claim of policy
