What is internet?
• It is sometimes referred to as cyberspace
• It is a collection of local, regional, national,
and international computer networks linked
together to exchange data and distribute
processing tasks
• It is an interconnected network that uses the
standard Internet Protocol Suite (ICP/IP) to
transport data

• Discussion Groups
• On-line Shopping
Birth of Internet
• It existed at the time of Cold War. It was originally
used for military purposes who have business
concerns with the defense department. The main
objective of the project was to build a network
that would protect the flow of information from
one site to another through redundant
communication lines. The first name of internet
was ARPAnet, from the agency who funded the
research (Advanced Research Projects Agency)
Birth of Internet
• During 1982, the term internet is used
• April 1995, the controllership of the internet
was handed over to independent governing
bodies which eased off entry for almost
everyone interested in the internet
Internet Connections
• A communication link must be established between
a computer and the internet to fully benefit from it
• ADSL connections (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber
Line)
• Cable Connections (PDLT)
• High Speed Internet Access (ISDN- Integrated
Services Digital Network) (DSL- Digital Subscriber
Line)
• ISP – Internet Service Provider
• Dial-up Connection
World Wide Web (WWW)
• It consists of a huge collection of documents,
called Web Pages
• Web pages – are stored on computers around
the world and may contain graphics, sound and
even movies
• Web Site – is a university, government agency, or
company that stores Web pages
• The computers and softwares that stores and
distribute web pages are called Web servers
Web Browsers
• It is sometimes called as Browsers is a
software program installed in the computer
that allows you to access internet
• Three popular browsers are Internet Explorer
and Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome

• It is a Microsoft software program that makes
it easier for you to get the most out of the
WWW whether you are searching for
information or browsing your favorite Web
sites

• Address Bar – displays the current page’s URL
also known as the Web address
• Tabs – it allows you to browse multiple URL’s
on a single window
• Favorites Center – can be added on the
window to displays all your favorites sites,
feeds, and history

• Progress bar – located beside the status
indicator which indicates the progress of the
page while
• Status Indicator – indicates the number of
bytes of information being transferred per
second, it also shows the different links of
Web page’s address
URL
• Stands for Uniform Resource Locators
• An address identifies the location of a Web
page in internet
• Allows you to navigate using links because it
tells the browser where to locate the
document or the Web site being accessed

Hackers and Crackers
• Hacker – is a person who does the fraudulent
act of exploring into other computers to know
the details of the system and how they work
• Cracker – is a technical person that breaks
through the system without the intention of
knowing the details of the system
Viruses
• The most serious attack on a client-computer
and a server
• It is a malicious code that replicates itself and
can be used to disrupt the information
structure and alter the computer operations
and can be spread further through email
attachments
Protection Against Viruses
• The most effective measures in preventing viruses
are the installation of antivirus software and firewall
• Firewall – general term that refers to the
hardware/software that restricts access to data and
information on a network
• Antivirus – is a utility program that protects a
computer by identifying and removing any
computer virus found in the computer’s memory,
on storage media
Privacy
• Cookie – is a file stored in the hard disk and
returned by the browser each time the site is
being revisited
• Spamming – some advertising companies send
the user a lot of e-mail messages regarding the
product they endorse
• Junk E-Mail- annoying because users who pay
for time spent online may also be paying for the
cost of junk e-mail delivery
Search Engine
• It is designed to search for information on the
World Wide Web, it requires the user to
specify search items then finds the sites that
match the specified term
