HVDTR Module 2

The human being can be understood as the co-existence of two distinct entities - the sentient self ('I') and the material body. Their needs and activities are different. The needs of the body are physical in nature and temporary, like food and shelter. The needs of the self ('I') are for continuous happiness and respect. The body acts as an instrument for the self, which is the doer, seer and enjoyer. All activities in the self like desires, thoughts and expectations are interrelated and continuous. Today, many desires are set based on pre-conditioning from external influences like ads, rather than self-reflection. This can lead to unhappiness.

(MODULE-2) Understanding Harmony
in the Human Being - Harmony in
Myself
7.Understanding human being as a co-existence of the sentient
‘I’ and the material ‘Body’
8. Understanding the needs of Self (‘I’) and ‘Body’ - Sukh and
Suvidha
9. Understanding the Body as an instrument of ‘I’ (I being the
doer, seer and enjoyer)
10. Understanding the characteristics and activities of ‘I’ and
harmony in ‘I’
11. Understanding the harmony of I with the Body: Sanyam
and Swasthya; correct appraisal of Physical needs, meaning
of Prosperity in detail
12. Programs to ensure Sanyam and Swasthya
‘Human being is co-existence of the Self
and the Body’

The human being is the co-existence of ‘I’ and

the body, and there is exchange of information
between the two, i.e. ‘I’ and body exist together
and are related. There is a flow of information
from ‘I’ to the body and from body to the ‘I’.
All the needs of I, say respect, trust, etc., can be
called as Happiness (such), while the needs of
body are physical facilities (suvidha) like food.
The activities of ‘I’ are activities like,
desire, thinking, selection, while the
activities of body are activities like eating,
breathing etc.
The human being is the total of
sentiments and physical aspect, the self
(‘I’) and the body.
I(self) Body
Conclusion
The human being can be understood in
terms of a co-existence of two entirely
distinct entities, namely sentient ‘I’ and
material body. Their needs and activities
are quite different and have to be
understood accordingly. But these two
constituents of human being are to act in
close synergy with each other.
Differentiate between the needs of self
and the needs of body
The human being is the co-existence of ‘I’ and the body, and there is
exchange of information between the two.
1.      Needs are ….The needs of the body like food for nourishment
clothes for protection, and instruments to ensure right utilization can be
categorized as being ‘physical’ in nature, or also called ‘physical
facilities’ (suvidha) whereas the need of I is essentially to live in a state
of continuous happiness (sukh). The needs of the body are physical in
nature, whereas the needs of the self (‘I’) are not physical in nature –
like trust, respect, happiness etc.
2.      In time, needs are… The needs of ‘I’ are continuous in time,
unlike the need of the body, which is temporary in time. We want
happiness continuously. We also want the feeling of respect
continuously and so also acceptance in relationship. If we talk about
food, clothing, shelter, or instruments, these are needed only for some
amount of time, or we can say that the need for physical facilities of the
body is temporary in time- it is not continuous
3.      Inquality, needs are….. Physical facilities are needed for the
body in a limited quantity. When we try and exceed these limits, it
becomes troublesome for us after some time. Let’s take the example of
eating. As far as, physical facilities (say rasgulla) go, they are necessary
in the beginning, but if we keep consuming, it becomes intolerable with
the passage of time. This applies to every physical facility. We can only
think of having unlimited physical facilities, but if we try and consume,
or have too much of physical facilities, it only ends up becoming a
problem for us. Whereas the needs of ‘I’ are qualitative (they are not
quantifiable), but we also want them continuously. Our feelings are
qualitative. Either they are or they are not. Ex. Happiness is qualitative.
Either we are feeling happy or we are not. Also if a feeling is not
naturally acceptable; we do not want it even for a single moment. If
acceptable, we want it continuously.
4.      Needs are fulfilled by….The need of the self (‘I’), for happiness
(sukh) is ensured by right understanding and right feelings, while the
need of the body, for physical facilities (suvidha), is ensured by
appropriate physico -chemical things.
“Human being is more than just the
body”
Human being is coexistence of the body and jivan. This
jivan refers to itself as ‘I’ (self).
Say “I feel tired” or “I am happy” and not “my body is
happy”. This I or self is also called ‘consciousness’ and is
the sentient constitute of the human being.
The human being is the total of sentiments and physical
aspect, the self (‘I’) and the body, and there is exchange of
information between the two, i.e. ‘I’ and body exist together
and are related. There is a flow of information from ‘I’ to
the body and from body to the ‘I’. We can make this
distinction between the self and the body in three ways in
terms of the needs, activities and the types of these two
entities.
Understanding the needs of Self (‘I’) and
‘Body’ - Sukh and Suvidha
Sukh is a holistic and all encompassing state of the
mind that creates inner harmony. Sukh is also called
as happiness.
Suvidha implies that it is looking for physical
comforts and all the sources of attaining such
comforts. When our body gets used to a certain
level of comfort then we will only feel comfortable
at that level e.g. comfort in fan, cooler or air
conditioner. Different people have a different
perception of suvidha and will seek a corresponding
level of suvidha according to their perceptions.
The needs of the body are quantitative
Needs of body are physical facilities.
Physical facilities are needed for the body
in a limited quantity. When we try and
exceed these limits, it becomes
troublesome for us after some time. Let’s
take the example of eating.
The needs of the body are quantitative.
Necessary and tasteful

Unnecessary but tasty Þ

Unnecessary and tasteless Þ

 Intolerable!
Understanding the Body as an instrument
of ‘I’ (I being the doer, seer and enjoyer)

There is a relation between the self and body that

body act as an instrument of self. Whatever self
thinks body performs it physically. Body does not
decide itself. We can verify this by the following
discussion.
I am the seer
I am the doer
I am the enjoyer
I am the seer-
I’ see via the eyes, the eyes don’t see, they are just instruments.
Different images are formed in the eyes every time, but it is I
who is able to relate it to the meaning of that image every time.
Similarly, I can see inside ‘in me’ also – without the eyes. For
example I can see that I am getting angry.

I am the doer: once I have seen/ understood something, I am

the one who decides what to do or not to do. I am the doer. For
example, when I see the scenery I am the one who decide to
take a picture of the scenery. I use my hands to pick camera
and click a picture. The hands in the body are thus used as an
instrument. In this way I work with my hands and legs.
I am the enjoyer: I saw the scenery and I
took the picture. I am the seer and doer so
far. When I see the picture I like it. I am
the one that enjoys it. Thus there is a
continuity of being the seer, doer and
enjoyer. Similarly when I eat, I am the
one that gets the taste – from the tongue.
Harmony In Self
(“I”) –
Understanding
Myself
Why should I study myself? / Getting to
know the activities in the Self(“I”):
The Self (I) is the basis of everything we do. All
our desires, expectations, thoughts, feelings,
understanding etc. come from the “I”.   Studying
our “Self” helps us to have more clarity about
ourselves and makes us confident. It develops
our understanding and helps in building good
relationships with everyone
Understanding the
characteristics and activities
of ‘I’ and harmony in ‘I’
The Self “I” is conscious in nature while
the “Body” is physico-chemical in nature.
The interaction between ‘I’ and the ‘Body’
is in the form of exchange of information.
For example- When your taste changes
from one company mobile to another
mobile, your selection of the shop /
showroom also changes according to your
new taste.
Inter-relation between the activities in “I” :  All
the activities going on in the “I” are inter-
related.
The flow of activities in “I” occurs in two ways:
1.      From outside to inside.(Body-I)
2.     From inside to outside. (I- Body)
1. From outside to inside.(Body-I)
Body - I - Thoughts – Desire

2.    From inside to outside. (I-Body)

Desire - Thoughts – I - Body
Imagination: It is the sum total of our
Desires + Thoughts + Expectations
The choices which we make with the
external world are based on our
imagination.
All the activities in the “I” are Continuous
and keep going on in us irrespective of
whether we want them or not.
What is pre-conditioning?
 Preconditioning means we have assumed
something about our desires on the basis of
prevailing notion about it. They comes from
what we read, see hear, what our parents tell us,
our friends talk about what the magazines talk
of, what we see on the TV etc. We have not self-
verified the desires in our own right.
As a result, we are not clear about what we will
get out of fulfillment of that desire.
Present Scenario:

Today, our thoughts and expectations are largely being set by pre-
conditionings and sensations which are causing unhappiness, stress and
discomfort in our lives. Such expectations can lead to contradictions in us
as we cannot be sure of ourselves.

Following are the two scenarios seen today –

Scenario 1: Desires set on the basis of pre-conditioning:

Pre- conditioning means to assume something about anything on the
basis of a prevailing notion without self-verification.

For e.g.: While seeing advertisements, we pay attention to it and start

thinking about it and associate some greatness with it and slowly the
thought becomes our desire. It is a pre-conditioned desire and we don’t
know what we are going to get out of the fulfillment of this desire.
Sometimes we are not even aware of the existence of such a desire in us.
Scenario 2: Expectations set on the basis of sensation:

Sensation is a feeling resulting from something that comes

into contact with the body.

For e.g.: We may develop a desire for a bike based on the

way it looked (sensation) or the taste associated with it.

Effects of the Problem –

Wavering Aspirations: When our desires are set by pre-
conditionings, our goals keep shifting quite often,  depending
on what we read, see, hear from media or friends or society.
Lack of Confidence: Since our desires are wavering, we
don’t have a clarity of what we ultimately want. This affects
our self-confidence as we feel confident only as long as our
opinion/ taste  is appreciated.
Lack of Qualitative improvement in us: when we
live based on the pre-conditionings, we focus largely
on the needs of the body and ignore the needs of the
“I”. As a result, in spite of accumulating a lot, we
don’t have a feeling of improvement or
betterment. The development is merely Quantitative
and not Qualitative.
State of Resignation: In spite of accumulating large
amounts of wealth, we are unable to understand
ourselves properly and have contradictions within.
When we are unable to find solutions for these
contradictions, we end up in a state of Resignation.
Unhappiness / Conflicts or Contradictions
in ‘I’ as a result of Pre-conditioned Desire:
Desires thoughts and expectations set by
pre-conditionings or sensations make us
undecided and create conflicting tendencies
within ourselves. These conflicts lead to
stress and unhappiness in us.
These conflicts exist at multiple levels –
  Desires are in conflict
 Thoughts are in conflict
  Expectations are in conflict
Living with pre-conditionings: This often leads to
a lack of clarity and self-confidence and develops a
feeling of stress, unhappiness and confusion in us.
Short lived nature of Pleasure from
Sensations:  Sensations are the ways of our body’s
detection of various things in our environment with
the help of the five major sensory organs. Whenever
there is a sensation from the Body to “I”, there is a
tasting in “I”. These sensations and tasting are
temporary in nature while the needs of the “I” are
continuous.  Hence, any sensation we have from the
Body can’t be a source of our lasting happiness.
Solution to the Problem
The solution is to start verifying our desires, thoughts and
expectations on the basis of our Natural Acceptance. As we
access our natural acceptance, it becomes possible for us to have
the right understanding of the harmony at all the levels of living.

The activities of Realization and Understanding: These are the

two activities in the Self.

 Realization: It means to be able to see the reality as it is

Understanding: It means to be able to understand the self-

organization in all entities of Nature/Existence and their inter-
connectedness at all the levels of our living.
Understanding the harmony of I
with the Body: Sanyam and
Swasthya; correct appraisal of
Physical needs, meaning of
Prosperity in detail
Harmony of the “I” with the Body:
The harmony of “I” with the body is:
  i.  In the form of Sanyama (Self-
Regulation) on part of “I
ii.  In the form of Svasthya (Health) on part
of the Body
Sanyama (Self-Regulation)
It is the feeling of responsibility in the Self (“I”) for
nurturing, protection and right utilization of the Body.

Once I realize that the Body is my instrument and
that the body needs nutrition, protection from the
environment and proper utilization to work as an
efficient tool for the right purpose, I naturally develop
a feeling of responsibility towards my Body. This
feeling of responsibility developed in “I” is
Sanyama. When I live with Sanyama, there is harmony
among the different parts of the Body and the Body
becomes my useful instrument.
Svasthya (Health)

It is the condition of the body where every

part of the body is properly performing its
expected function. This leads to harmony
within the body, and the body become
perfectly fit for use by the “I”.
There is a strong coupling between
“I” and the “Body”. Disharmony in any
one of them adversely affects the other.
Harmony with the Body

the Body harmony (in order)
Food… Clothes, Shelter... Instruments…
Limited, Limited, Limited quantity
Physical Facility is required in a limited
quantity
What is our state today?

· Lack of Responsibility (Lack of Sanyam) towards the Body:

- Eating junk food

- Satisfaction with physical work or labour

- trying to fulfill the continuous needs of the Self (‘I’) namely,

Happiness by trying to extend pleasant body sensations which
proves contrary to the health of the body.

e.g:- in an attempt to keep enjoying tasty food, we ignore the fact

that we are eating for the nourishment of the Body and not to give
continuous happiness to ‘I’.
What is our State Today?

· Tendency for Medication to Suppress the Ailment:

• Pain in any part of the Body is a signal of some disorder which

needs to be properly attended to.
• common tendency has become to suppress this pain by medication
and then forget about it.

• focus today seems to be more on “fighting germs in the body” than

on helping the body restore itself to its natural state of harmony.

• we consume lot of harmful substances in the name of medicines.

• we are building hospitals and inventing sophisticated equipment

rather than focusing on ensuring health of the body so that we do
not fall sick.
What is our State Today?

· Polluted Air, Water, Food:

· There is contamination in the Air, Water, Soil, Plants and we are responsible for it.

· Our food has become impure. Due to heavy use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and
a lot of pollution, our food has all kinds of toxic contents in it.

· The air we breathe in, is polluted by various chemicals released from industries and
vehicles.

· Water is polluted due to industrial wastages, sewage.

· All this not conducive to the health of people. Increase of Hospitals or medical grants is
no substitute to Sanyam.
What is the Way out?

· To understand and live with Sanyam.

· To understand the Self-organization of the Body and ensure Health of

the Body.
Sanyam ensures Swasthya

· Sanyam - 'I' takes the responsibility for Nurturing, Protection and

Right Utilization of the Body.

· Sanyam is the feeling of responsibility in 'I' towards the body for its
nurture, protection and right utilization.

· Swasthya (Health) –

1. The Body acts according to the needs of 'I'.

2. There is Harmony among the parts of the Body.

· Swasthya (Health) has two elements – The Body acts according to

me, and there is Harmony in the Body. The two go together.
Sanyam ensures Swasthya

· With Right Understanding, I get self-organized and take care of the

body properly. With lack of understanding, I am not able to do it and
the body becomes unhealthy.

· Ex:- When I am Happy, the temperature and Blood Pressure (BP)

are normal. When I am angry or tense, they get upset. (High BP)
Understanding and Living with Sanyam

· 1..Nurturing of the Body (Posana):

· Proper Food, Air, Water:(Ahar)

· Ingestion: The food needs to be chewed well before swallowing. If

chewed well, the work of the lower parts of the body is simplifies.

· Digestion: This is done by the body itself. It needs to be facilitated

by eating only when feeling hungry, choosing the food which is easily
digestible, choosing the proper posture while taking food, eating the
right quantity of food.

· Excretion: The stomach needs to be empties well every day and

only then the fresh food can be taken in. The undigested food needs
to be removed from the body after a given time or it starts spoiling the
body.
Understanding and Living with Sanyam

· 2..Protection of the Body (Sanrakshana): 'I' need to arrange for

clothing and shelter for the body to protect it.

· The clothes and shelter need to be such that they ensure proper
interaction of the body with the environment. The right amount of
exposure of the body to the air, water and sun is required to ensure
its proper funtioning.

· To ensure the Health of the body, we need to take care of the

following:
Program for Health:
1a. Ahar (Intake) 1b. Vihar (Routine)
2a. Shram (Labour) 2b. Vyayam (Exercise)
3a. Asan (Asan) 3b. Pranayam (Breathing)
4a. Aushadhi (Medicine) 4b. Chikitsa (Treatment)
Understanding and Living with Sanyam

· Proper upkeep (Vihar) of the Body: When we work, the Body gets
tired. When we take rest, the Body becomes fit to work. We also
need to ensure proper time, posture and ways to work and to rest.

· Physical Labour (Shrama): Physical Labour means employing the

body physically for production and maintenance of physical facilities.

· Asan-Pranayam: The systems of the body have to be kept running

properly through Yogasana (giving the body proper postures by
sitting or lying) and Pranayam (breathing exercises).
Understanding and Living with Sanyam

· Treatment of the Body (Ausadhi-Chikitsa): The body may get

unhealthy at times. Then I need to treat the body to make it healthy
again.

· For this, I may go without food for some time, or arrange for only
specific kinds of food for the body.

· I may treat the body with Air, water, Sun, soil, herbs or medicines.

· Here one thing to understand is that, the systems of the body work in
a self-organized way and I only need to facilitate the self-organization
of the body.

· At times, I may need to go for Surgery of the body too.

3..Right Utilization of the Body (Sadupayoga)

· Right utilization of the Body as an instrument needs understanding the

purpose for which this instrument is to be used.

· Believed that the Body is an instrument for sensory enjoyment which is

not correct.

· Body to exploit other human beings or rest of the nature which is also
not right utilization.

· Human body is an instrument to facilitate right understanding and its

actualization in life.
Right Utilization of the Body (Sadupayoga)

· I need to ensure that I use my Body for right behaviour and work.
When I do so, there is harmony in the self and favourable effects on
the Body.

· If, I use it for acting in opposition with other human beings or nature
like quarrelling, fighting, stealing, there is disharmony in the self
which has adverse effects on the Body.

· I also need to arrange for appropriate equipments/instruments for

Right Utilization of the Body. They increase the efficiency and
capacity of the body and also helps my body to avoid tedious work.
SUMMARY

• Sanyam ensures Swasthya.

• The Programs of Sanyam include nurturing, protection and right

utilization of the Body so that this instrument can be used for the
purpose for which it is meant.

• That is to gain and actualize the Right Understanding.

· Correct Appraisal of our Physical Needs-
· The correct appraisal of needs constitute the first step towards
ensuring prosperity.
· Physical Facilities required for nurturing, protection and right
utilization of the body are limited
• In Nature, the availability of facilities like water, oxygen etc. is more
than our needs. Once we realize that the needs of our Body are
limited and can be easily fulfilled, there emerges a possibility of
prosperity in our minds
Salient Conclusions of Module-2: Harmony in the Human Being.

• The salient conclusions arising out of the exploration

carried out during Module-2 towards understanding
myself-the Human Being are as follows:

1. We are continuing the process of Self-exploration on the basis of

Natural Acceptance and Experiential Validation.

2. 'I' and the Body are two complementary but distinct constitutents of
Human Being living in co-existence.

Their characteristics, activities and needs are to be distinctly understood.

• The activities of the Self (I) are continuous while the activities of the Body
are time-dependent.
Salient Conclusions of Module-2: Harmony in the Human Being.

3. Moving towards Harmony in the activities of the Self (I) through Self-
exploration is the way to continuous Happiness.

• Right Understanding of the Harmony of Self (I) with the Body enables
us to access the need for Physical facilities, and also indicates the
way to ensure Prosperity.
