Week 29 Maths (Lead) - Trigonometry

This lesson covered trigonometry and right triangles. It discussed labeling the sides of right triangles as the hypotenuse, opposite, and adjacent sides. It explained the trigonometric ratios of sine, cosine, and tangent in terms of these sides. Examples were given of using a calculator to find trigonometric ratios for given angles. Students learned to use trigonometry to find missing sides or angles of right triangles. Key concepts included using trig ratios like sine of 30 degrees equals 1/2 based on similar right triangles.

imilar Triangles

What do these triangles have in common?

They are similar triangles.

The ratio of the height to the diagonal is 1:2.

What is the length of the diagonal hypotenuse in

this triangle?

70

This triangle is similar to the previous ones so the ratio of the

vertical side to the diagonal is always the same.

When the angle is 30° the relationship between the sides is

1:2, mathematicians write this as sine 30° = ½

rigonometry
Trigonometry uses three important ratios to calculate sides and angles; sine,
cosine and tangent.
These ratios are defined in terms of the sides of a right-angled triangle and
an angle. The angle is often written as θ.

In a right angled triangle:

•the side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse and is the longest
side.
•the side opposite the angle θ is called the opposite side
•the other side next to both the right angle and the θ is called the adjacent
side

Use a calculator to find the trigonometric ratio
You will need to use a calculator to find
trigonometric ratios.

Different calculators work in different ways, so

make sure you know how to use your model.

Angles are not always measured in degrees.

Sometimes radians or grads are used instead.
You do not need to know about these yet, but
do make sure your calculator is set to degrees
mode.

You will probably press the keys

sin 3 0 =
in that order, but it might be different on your calculator.

The answer should be 0.5... (do you remember this was the ratio from the
triangles earlier)

3cos 57 ° is a shorthand way of writing 3 x cos 57 °

On most calculators you do not need to use the x button and you can just
press the keys in the way it is written:

3 cos 5 7 =

Check to see whether your calculator works this way.
