Plants require light to grow. This study examines the effects of sunlight and fluorescent light on the growth of Capsicum frutescens (Siling Labuyo) plants. The independent variable is the type of light (sunlight or fluorescent), and the dependent variables are the number of leaves, plant height, leaf color, and number of marketable fruits. Both sunlight and fluorescent light can promote plant growth but also have disadvantages - too much sunlight can cause sun scald while fluorescent light may not provide the right spectrum for flowering. The conclusion is that both light sources have benefits and limitations for plant growth.

How can light affect the growth of plants?
 In terms of;
• number of leaves
• color of the leaves
• amount of marketable produce
What kind of light can promote better plant growth?
Effects of the
exposure
to sunlight
and artificial light
on the growth of
Siling Labuyo
(Capsicum
frutescens)
plant
Background of the study
• In the process of photosynthesis plants
convert energy from sunlight into plant
foods that will help them grow. However,
some articles suggests the use of artificial
light to help those who have limited
access to sunlight, to grow their plants in
an indoor space. So in this study, we will
find out how the exposure to different
kinds of lighting affect the growth of the
chili (Capsicum frutescens) plant
Background of the study
• "Siling labuyo" originated in the Philippines.
It grows in between 1 to 4 feet (0.30 to 1.22 m)
high. They have smooth ovate to lanceolate
leaves that are around 2.5 in (6.4 cm) in length
with pointed tips. They produce small greenish-
white flowers with purple stamen
• It is also characterized by its
triangular fruits growing upward. It is
also known as a small but hot variety
of chili, which measures around
80,000 to 100,000 Scovile units, its
common name ‘siling labuyo’ is a
Tagalog word for wild chili.
Background of the study
• But siling labuyo is listed in the Ark of
Taste international catalog of endangered
heritage foods of the Philippines by the
Slow Food movement, so in this study,
we aim to know how many hours of
exposure to sunlight can chili (Capsicum
frutescens) withstand, thus have a
higher marketable fruit
production

CHAPTER 2

⊷Literatur
e Review

⊷ “Plants require sunlight to
grow, but they differ in the
amount and intensity
needed. Full sun, part sun,
part shade, or full shade
are labels to identify the
amount of sun a plant
requires.”
(Kim Toscano, August 2019)
Effect of different light levels on the growth and production of Chili
Pepper and Tomato Plants

⊷ Two-week old ‘Sweet Banana’

chili pepper and ‘Celebrity
tomato’ are provided with light
treatments: full sunlight, 50%
sunlight, and 30% sunlight. The
effects of the light treatments
are based on soil water
moisture, soil temperature, leaf
temperature, height, and
number of marketable fruits.
(Youping Sun, Joseph G. Masbini, Priscilla
Del Valle, Genhua Niu, 2015).”
Effect of different light levels on the growth and production of Chili
Pepper and Tomato Plants

⊷ “Chili pepper plants under full sun had 2.1

°C and 4.3 °C higher leaf temperature than
those under 50% and 30% sunlight,
respectively.”
⊷ “Both chili pepper and tomato plants under
full sun were shorter and smaller than
those under 50% and 30% sunlight.”
⊷ “Chili pepper plants grown under full sun
produced 62% and 115% number of
marketable fruits and had 17% and 67%
higher yields than those under 50% and
30% sunlight, respectively.”
(Youping Sun, Joseph G. Masbini, Priscilla Del
Valle, Genhua Niu, 2015).”

(Youping Sun, Joseph G. Masbini,
Priscilla Del Valle, Genhua Niu,

⊷ “Pepper sunscald is
common when the
plants are forming fruit
in the late summer heat.
Sunscald on pepper
plants can cause the
fruit to get woody and
tough and ruin it
cosmetically.”
(Bonnie L. Grant, 2021).
⊷ Sunscald on pepper plants

“ primarily affects the fruit;

the foliage may get white
streaks and dry edges. The
fruit will crack and split
where the scald occurs.
Since the fruit have
cracked, bacteria and fungi
can easily get inside the
fruit and rot it completely.
(Bonnie L. Grant, 2021).
⊷ “Shading is the best
“ management option; cultivars
with a thick canopy usually
show low sunscald
incidence.”
(Mathieu Ngouajio, 2011)
⊷ “Modern plant lighting has focused on

the LED sources of light, but
fluorescent lights are still widely
available and easy to use. Fluorescent
light is inexpensive and works very
well for small gardens and plants with
low light requirement. There are many
benefits of fluorescent lightning for
growing plants, such as, it is cheaper
compared to other types of lightning
systems, it is very simple to use, has
high energy efficiency, and very low
heat emission.”
(Steven, October 2020)

⊷ “They are an excellent source of
light for young seedlings and plant
starts.”
⊷ “Fluorescent light and plants will
increase growth and output in
interior situations.”
(Bonnie L. Grant, September 2019).
⊷ “Fluorescent lights provide almost all blue
light waves. This makes them excellent for

“ growing foliage plants. Use them to start

seedlings as well. Fluorescent lights are
cool, making them safe around plants,
because they won’t burn the leaves. Since
standard fluorescent lights tend to be
limited in intensity, place them very close
to growing plants, about 2 inches for
seedlings and 4 inches for older plants.
Leave the lights on about 14 to 16 hours
per day for best results.”
(Cindy Quarters, April 2011)

⊷ “Fluorescent lights are the most
popular choice for home growers.
Some newer types offer a wider light
spectrum for all-purpose use, but
traditional fluorescent bulbs lack the
appropriate range for flowering and
are best suited for germination and
vegetative growth.”
(Mick Telkcamp, March 2016)
The Effect of Fluorescent Light on Plant Growth.

⊷ “Plants growing under fluorescent

“ lights can thrive and exhibit good

foliage, but blooms may be
delayed or never appear at all.
Too much fluorescent light will
also harm plants -- artificial light
should mimic the day and night
cycles found in nature.”
(Elise Cooke in September 2017)
⊷ “Among the disadvantages of fluorescent

grow lights is the small yield per watt
(those type of lights has the smallest
yield per watt of any other type), and the
fact that they are not as useful during the
vegetative and flowering stages of plant
growth because the fluorescent light is
not strong enough to penetrate deep
down into the plant. They are most
beneficial for short and flat plants.”
(Cindy M, February 2019)

⊷ “The lighting you choose depends on
the area you need to cover and the
light requirements of the plant.
Supplemental light is usually
essential for starting seeds indoors.
Seedlings that don’t get enough
natural or artificial light grow tall and
rangy, with weak stems. To grow
strong seedlings, the light should be
placed close to the tray, and raised
as the plants grow taller.”
(Gloria Ballard, July 2019)
CONCLUSION:

⊷ Both sunlight and artificial

fluorescent light have good
and bad effects on the growth
of Siling Labuyo or
Capsicum fructescens plant.
Sunlight can increase the
photosynthetic process in
plants which translates to
increased growth, however
too much of it can also cause
sun scalding.
CONCLUSION:
⊷ While exposure of the chili
plant to fluorescent lamp
can increase plant growth
and exhibit good foliage, it
can also help in growing
plants in an indoor space,
but overexposure of plants
to this kind of light can dry
the plant out and will
remove its water so the
plant will have a difficulty in
the photosynthetic process.
