Bernal - Engineering Utilities 2

This document discusses sizing the distribution lines for a one-story residential building plumbing system. It calculates the total water demand of 6 water fixture units (WFU), or 48 gallons per minute. It then determines the net pressure at the water meter is 275.8 kPa. Using Table 6-6, it specifies the meter and street service line should be 19mm, while the building supply and branches can be 13mm. An example is also provided to size the pipes for a 2-story commercial building based on its fixtures and 27m pipe length.

1 WATER CLOSET
1 LAVATORY
1 KITCHEN SINK

LENGTH= 9m
Compute the total water demand

REFER TO TABLE 6-5

WATER CLOSET (PRIVATE USE - 3 WFU X 1 =3 1 FU = 1Ft3/min
SINK (DISHWASHER) - 2 WFU X 1 =2 =7.5 gal/min or approx. 8 gal/min
LAVATORY -1 WFU X 1 =1

TOTAL =6 WFU Water Demand= 48 gal per minute

COMPUTE THE NET PRESSURE AT THE WATER METER

Pressure= Ave. Pressure at the Main – Static Pressure

P=Pave. - Pstatic

Pstatic=Pressure loss due to elevation change (9.79 X h)

Where h= is the elevation of the remote fixture

Pave. =service pressure at the Main (Water District)

-In Davao Ciity, Water Main has an average pressure of 30-50 psi(345 kPA)
Compute the Net Pressure

P= Pave. - Pstatic
6.895 kPA
40 psi x = 275.8 kPA
1 psi

P=Pave. - Pstatic

P= 275.8 kPa – 9.79(h)

P= 275.8 kPa – 9.79(0)

P= 275.8 kPa
Determine the Pipe size with the aid of
Table 6-6
1. Choose the table based on the pressure ranger where the net pressure at the
water meter will fall.
2. Select the length column which is equal to or greater than the required length
3. Follow down the column to a fixture unit value equal or greater than the total
number of fixture units required by the installation.

- No building water service pipe shall be less than 19 mm in diameter.

P=Pave. - Pstatic

P= 275.8 kPa – 9.79(h) Meter and Street Service = 19 mm

P= 275.8 kPa – 9.79(0) Building Supply and Branches = 13mm

P= 275.8 kPa
EXAMPLE 1
Design the pipe size for 2-story commercial building having 5 water closet (Flush
Tank), 5 lavatories, 2 Bathtubs, 3 Kitchen sink, 10 urinals(Flush Tank). Story
height is 3 meters. Pressure in the water main is 320kPa. And the length of the
pipe is 27 meters.

Water closet 5 X 5 WSFU =25 WSFU P= Pave. - Pstatic

Lavatories 5 X 2 WSFU =10 WSFU
Bathtub 2 X 4 WSFU =8 WSFU P= 320 kPA – 9.79( 3)
Kitchen sink 3 X 4 WSFU =4 WSFU
Urinals 10 X 3 WSFU =3 WSFU P= 290.63 kPA
TOTAL = 85
WSFU
WATER DEMAND = 85 X 8 = 680 gal/min.
Meter and street service = 38 mm

Building Supply and Branches = 38 mm
