Instrumentation and Control System - 13

This document discusses single-input single-output (SISO) systems and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. SISO systems have a single input and single output, like temperature control systems, while MIMO systems have multiple inputs and outputs, such as distillation columns. The Wood-Berry distillation column is provided as an example of a MIMO system. SISO systems are represented by transfer functions, while MIMO systems are represented by transfer matrices. Control of MIMO processes involves using a decoupler to separate the system into independent SISO systems.

SISO and MIMO systems

SISO system
• In this, the system has single input for a single output. Various
example of this kind of system may include temperature
control, position control system etc.

MIMO system
• In this, the system has multiple outputs for multiple inputs.
Various example of this kind of system may include
distillation column, coupled tank system etc.

• SISO system are represent by transfer function where as
MIMO systems are by transfer matrix.
• Example of MIMO system:

MIMO process control:
• The generalized structure of two-input two-output
multivariable feedback control system with an ideal
decoupler is shown in below.

• Where, DWB(s) = Adj [GWB(s)]K(s)

K(s) is a diagonal matrix. The elements of K(s) (kii (s)) are obtained such
that common pole-zero, common dead time and smallest gain from ith
column of Adj [GWB(s)] are removed and their inverse is included in kii

(s). The resulting decoupler is determined from above equation.
Even a small " DOT " can stop a big sentence.
But few more " DOTS " can give a
