CHAPTER 3

INPUT DEVICES
COMPUTER PERIPHALS
 A computer peripheral is any external device
that provides input and output for the
computer. For example, a keyboard and
mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor
and printer are output peripherals. Computer
peripherals, or peripheral devices, are
sometimes called "I/O devices" because they
provide input and output for the computer.
INPUT DEVICES
 DEFINITION - These are devices that are
used to provide data and control signals to a
computer.
 It allows the user to give instructions to the
computer.
 Without these devices there is no interaction
between the user and the computer.
TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
 Mouse
 Keyboard
 Scanner
 Touchpad
 Joystick
 Digital camera
 Microphone
 Webcam
MOUSE
 This is a hand-held device which moves the
cursor around the computer usually placed on
a pad.  that controls a cursor in a GUI and can
move and select text, icons, files, and folders.
 There are different types of mice designed for
different uses.
 For example: mechanical mice, optical mice,
cordless mice, many buttoned mice, trackball
mice, stylus mice.
  was invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1963
TYPES OF MICE
 Mechanical mice: A mechanical mouse is a
computer mouse that contains a metal or rubber
ball on its under side. When the ball is rolled in
any direction, sensors inside the mouse detect
this motion and move the on-screen mouse
pointer in the same direction.
 Optical mice: it uses LED(Light Emitting Diode)
to detect movement.
 Cordless Mice: these are like the optical mice
but differ in that these require batteries for them
to work and connect to the base station through
wireless signal/radio/infrared technology.
CONT..D
 Many Buttoned: have three or more buttons
which are programmed to perform different
functions.
 Trackball Mice: it uses a ball that is rotated.
No space is required for its use. The are used
in applications eg computer aided designs.
 Stylus Mice: these are mostly used by
designers because of their feel and look of a
pen. These draw over a special pad which
tracks the pen’s movement and pressure.
KEYBOARD
 It looks like that of a typewriter. The types of
keyboards available include:
 Standard keyboard
 Multi-function keyboard
 Laptop Keyboard
TYPES OF KEYBOARDS
 Standard: it is the QWERTY keyboard. It
allows the user to input letters, numbers and
other symbols.
 Multi-Functional: it has some added keys to
it which allows the user to interact with the
computer in many ways.
 Laptop keyboard: constrained by the width
of the laptop and are like the standard one.
This one has some few functions found on the
multi-functional keyboard.
TOUCHPAD
 These are used as pointing devices on the
laptop.
 Laptop touchpad: surfaces installed on a
laptop which when touched track mouse-like
movement on screen.
 External touchpad: these touchpads require
a USB port to plug into. One may need this
one when they buy a multi-functional
keyboard for their laptop.
SCANNERS
 A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic
prints, posters, magazine pages, and similar sources for computer
editing and display.
 A scanner is an electronic device that scans printed or handwritten
text documents, images, or a particular object to convert them into a
digital file format. Most of the scanners use CCD, (charge-coupled
device) or CIS, (Contact Image Sensor) as the image sensors.
 The common types of scanners we see today are flatbed scanners,
handheld scanners/barcode reader, sheetfed scanners/ORC, etc.
 Flatbed scanners often come with sheet feeders for scanning
multiple sheets of paper rather than one at a time. Contrast with
"sheet-fed scanner," which accepts only paper, and contrast with
handheld scanner and drum scanner.
 The scanner is capable of capturing all elements on the document
and does not require movement of the document. Flatbed scanners
are effective scanners for delicate materials such as vintage
photographs, papers and other documents which are fragile.
FLATBED SCANNER PIC
BARCODE READER
 they are very small in size which can be held
in a hand . These are less expensive and less
wide. Hence in order to scan a single page
image multiple passes are required.
 These scan barcodes such as those used in
grocery items. The computer is pre-
programmed to recognize the various codes
represented by bars and transfer them into
numeric information such as prices.
HANDHELD SCANNER PICS
OCR
 It is a widespread technology to recognise text
inside images, such as scanned documents and
photos. OCR technology is used to convert
virtually any kind of images containing written text
(typed, handwritten or printed) into machine-
readable text data.
 Probably the most well known use case for OCR is
converting printed paper documents into machine-
readable text documents. Once a scanned paper
document went through OCR processing, the text
of the document can be edited with word
processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
 It is a technology that recognizes text within a
digital image. It is commonly used to recognize
text in scanned documents and images.
 Touchscreens: these are common on the
smartphones, speciality monitors, tablets.
OTHER INPUT DEVICES
 Joystick: it has levers that can be moved
around to control the movement on the
screen. These are used in flight simulators or
to control computer operated machines.
 Digital Camera: these take pictures and save
them in electronic format and the pictures can
be can be transferred to the computer for
editing and printing. Once connected to a
computer these DC are identified as external
storage devices.
 Microphone: it is used to input sound. It detects
the sound and send to the computer.
 Web cam: it is an input device because it
captures a vedio image of the scene in front of it.
It can be built-in eg on the lapton or connected
through a USB cable.
Common Uses
 Chatting: people can see each other whilst
chatting over the internet. TELECONFERENCING
 Tourists
 Security
