• UGU is a greenish leafy vegetable grown in Nigeria and West Africa.


• The leaves contain lots of vitamins and minerals.
• This is why it is used in making soup and for medicinal purposes.
• Ugu is a drought tolerance plant, dioecious and perennial.
• The plant produces leaves and plant which is mostly consumed.
• The fruit contains seeds used in planting and consumed by some people.
• The seed is high in protein and fat.
Agronomy of Telfaira occidentalis (UGU)
• It is majorly a dioecious flowering plant.
• This means it produces separate male and female parts on different plants.
• The plant size ranges from 16 to 105cm in the length for large plant
• It has an average diameter of 9cm.
• The seed count in the fluted gourd can be up to 120 depending on the size
of the pod and seed. The plant flower grows in sets of five showing a
creamy-white and dark red petal
• The young fruit is light green in colour.
• Ugu is best planted in a sandy –loam soil.
Uses of Fluted Pumpkin (Ugu)

Plant Management (Irrigation)
• Wetting should be done every 2-3 days.
• Irrigation can be done using;
• Drip Irrigation System,
• Sprinkler, Rain Gun
• Or Manual Wetting.

• Drip irrigation is best used to conserve water


• And to reduce pest attack.
Harvesting/Yield
• Harvesting starts after 2-3months.
• This depends on the type of seeds bought and the plant management.
• 2,500/bed or ridge x 12 beds = N30,000 every 3 weeks.
• Within 6 months, harvest can be done 24 times;
• 30,000 x 24 = 720,000 Naira on a plot for 6 months.
Seed Production

• Female Plants start flowering 6-8 months after planting.


• A plant can produce 1-2 pods.
• A pod is sold for N1000 - N1500 depending on size.
NOTE

• After first harvest the land should be fertilized with manure or any
other fertilizer to enhance leave growth for the next harvest which is
about 3 weeks later.
• Weeding should be done once in a month or when the weeds are much
for the plants.
