Thank You Kuya”
By: Clarizelle Jam R. Concepcion
“
Jose and Joaquin are brothers. Jose is the eldest.
He loves reading books, watching news and
keeping updated with what is happening in the
surroundings, while Joaquin just loves playing
basketball or having a music jam with his friends.
14
Suddenly, there is a pandemic due to Covid-19. A virus
that killed thousands of people in China, and had rapidly
“
spread not only in their country, but in the whole world
including the Philippines. This is a serious disaster which
ended their school announcing cancellation of classes, and
the government issued all people to be quarantined.
Everyone must stay at home to prevent the spread of virus.
On their scheduled market day, Jose and Joaquin’s mom
went out to buy essential needs.
15
When their mom is gone, Joaquin sneak out of the
house to meet with his friends. Jose, as the older brother,
“
stopped Joaquin because they are still under quarantine.
They are not allowed to go out or else they might get the
virus and be caught by the roaming “tanod”. But Joaquin is
so hard headed. He did not listen to his “kuya”. He
arrogantly answered back that viruses are nonsense. He
even boasted that if he got sick, it will easily fade away
because there is no existing Covid-19 viruses in their place,
and thinking that they should enjoy the days without
classes.
16
But his “kuya” insisted that Joaquin has to stay home.
He told him what he have watched and heard from the news
“
that staying at home is the best prevention from getting the
virus. Also, kids of their age are not yet allowed to go
outside. Still, Joaquin questioned his “kuya” why his friends
can go out while he cannot. He was jealous with his friends
who enjoy playing basketball. “Oooh poor Joaquin, viruses
are just hearsays, your mom just really doesn’t want you to
play with us. How poor the people who keep on wearing
face mask and face shield.
17
Why should they wash their hands with soap that often?
Just wet your hands and it will be clean! They are silly
“
people. There are no virus existing in our place. This was
just a mere joke. Don’t believe on them. Come on, let’s play
outside!” Joaquin’s friends shouted throughout their
window. Jose calmly explained to Joaquin that it is very
important to gather facts and should not easily believe in
hearsays or “sabi-sabi”. It is best for them to believe in
news in television because news are more reliable and
based on facts.
18
Newsmen are gathering information that are evident and
real. Jose also emphasized that if Joaquin loves their mom, he
“
will not let his mom get worried when she finds out that he is
not at home. Joaquin finally listened. Few days later, Joaquin’s
friend that teased him was brought to the hospital for having a
high fever and some symptoms of the Covid-19 disease.
Joaquin hugged his “kuya” for not giving up on explaining to
him what might happen to him if he insisted going out. He
then whispered to Jose’s ears, “Thank you kuya.”
