Quarter 2 Lesson 1 Illustrate Polynomial Functions Read Only1

The document defines polynomial functions and discusses how to identify them. It explains that a polynomial function is an algebraic expression with one or more terms, where each term consists of a constant and variables raised to integer powers. The document provides examples of polynomial and non-polynomial expressions. It also discusses how to determine the standard form, leading term, leading coefficient, degree, and constant term of a given polynomial function.

In G7,G8 and G9 ,you learned that a function
is linear if it has a degree of 1. It is quadratic
if it is in the degree of 2.

You also learned that the degree is the highest or

largest exponent of a variable in the function.
These functions – linear, quadratic, cubic and
other functions of a higher degree belong to a
class of functions called the polynomial
function.

Now what is a polynomial function?

Definition…
1. It is an algebraic expression consisting of one
or more summed terms…

 each term consisting of a constant multiplier

and one or more variables raised to integral
powers.
For example, x2 − 5x + 6 and 2p3q + y are
polynomials.
It is also called multinomial.

2. It is an expression of two or more terms.

Specifically we define polynomials as

P(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1+an-2xn-2+…+a1x1+a0

Wherein:
• an is the leading coefficient
• anxn is the leading term
• a0 is called the constant term of
polynomial
For example, let us consider polynomial function
f(x) = 5x³ − 4x² + 7x − 8

• The leading term is 5x³

• The leading coefficient is 5
• The degree of a polynomial is the degree of
the leading term. Therefore, the degree is 3
• The constant term of a polynomial is the term
of degree 0; it is the term in which the variable
does not appear. Therefore, the constant term
is  -8.
Use the given polynomial to get the standard form of the
equation, leading term leading coefficient, degree of
  polynomial and the constant term.
y= − 3 + 5
𝟒 𝟐
The standard equation is 𝐲=− 𝟑 𝒙 + 𝟒 𝒙 +𝟓

• The leading term is   -3

• The leading coefficient is -3
• The degree of a polynomial is the degree of
the leading term. Therefore, the degree is 4
• The constant term of a polynomial is the term
of degree 0; it is the term in which the variable
does not appear. Therefore, the constant term
is  5.
Use the given polynomial to get the standard form of the
equation, leading term, leading coefficient, degree of
  polynomial and the constant term.
y=

The standard equation is   𝐲=𝟐 𝒙 𝟐+𝟐 𝒙

• The leading term is
• The leading coefficient is 2
• The degree of a polynomial is the degree of
the leading term. Therefore, the degree is 2
• The constant term of a polynomial is the term
of degree 0; it is the term in which the variable
does not appear. Therefore, the constant term
is  0.
