GENRES OF URBAN WRITING OBJECTIVES In this module, you are expected to: a. differentiate the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier genres/ periods citing their elements, structures, and traditions; b. determine the technological advancements of the 20 th century; c. value the proper use of social media platforms; and d. promote proper use of social media platforms by giving reactions from current issues in the Philippines. Luzon It is the most populous island group in the Philippines. Almost half of the ethnic groups of the Philippines are found in Luzon (the 2010 NSO statistics tally about 48.8%). These ethnic groups use these major regional languages: Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Bicolano, and Pangasinense. Luzon Moreover, the English language is widely used in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It is not surprising that people would want to live in Luzon considering that the economic and political center of the country, Metro Manila, is in this region. Meaning the idea of Manila- centrism is always present to people’s mind. Luzon Additionally, to address the needs for education of Luzon’s big population, the most number of schools and universities (like Arellano University, Ateneo de Manila, University of Sto. Tomas and De La Salle University) can be found in this island group, making it the seat of literacy (meaning center of education) in the country. Luzon Therefore, as a result of the efforts from the private and public sectors in Luzon, 94% of its population has achieved functional literacy that must be fined-tuned to address new technologies like the Internet. W H AT I S I N T E R N E T ? Internet is one of the biggest technological advancements of the 20th century that solidified the dawning of the Information Age. W H AT I S I N T E R N E T ? In the digital world of the Internet, citizens from a particular country become netizens of the globe because of the physical borders as those found in the maps of nations seem to be invisible and that people who connect online usually step out of the confines of their geographic reality and step into global citizenship. “As the Internet becomes a necessity, it also connects people of our archipelago with the use of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in which most Filipinos have begun using today. These social media platforms are not only for entertainment but also for social awareness. For instance, articles and news that are being posted online that give awareness to people about the recent events and happenings locally and internationally. However, beware with the posts that you will be sharing online, you might be victimized by
fake news that may cause conflict to others. ”
What is the relationship between the internet and literacy? Internet has allowed writers to experiment with other forms for expressing their literary skills. Some new forms of creative output mediated by the technologies and devices are being created like: Web log or
