Test of Function (Equation) and Operation On Functions

This document provides examples and explanations of performing operations on functions, including: 1) The sum, difference, product, and quotient of two functions f and g are defined by specific equations. 2) Only exponents of the same value can be added or subtracted when operating on functions. 3) In subtraction, the first function is kept and the sign of the second is changed following K-C-C (keep, change, change). 4) In multiplication, different exponents can be multiplied but different variables are simply copied. 5) Division excludes values where the second function is equal to 0, and there are multiple approaches like long division or simplifying.

TEST OF FUNCTION

(EQUATION) AND
OPERATION ON
FUNCTIONS
Gen Math Lesson 2
(Test of functions)
Test of Function
For the equation the domain and
range is very important because it
estimates the possible values of the
variable x. (evaluate the function by
changing the value of x)
Example
Given
•  the function:

What is f(1)?

Step 1.

Step 2. Change f(x) = f(1)

Step 3. Replace x in the equation with 1

Step 4. solve

Step 5.
Example
Given
•  the function:

What is f(5)?

Step 1.

Step 2. Change f(x) = f(5)

Step 3. Replace x in the equation with 5

Step 4. solve

Step 5.
OPERATION ON
FUNCTION
LESSON 3
Let f and g be function.
••
a. Their sum, denoted by , is the function defined by
• b. Their difference, denoted by , is the function defined by
• c. Their product, denoted by , is the function defined by
• d. Their quotient, denoted by , is the function defined by ,
excluding the values of x where g(x) ≠ 0
IN ADDITION
•In addition, Only same number of exponent
can be added or subtracted. If their exponent
is not the same then ignore it and just copy
the expression.
IN SUBTRACTION
•For the difference of function remember
K-C-C or Keep Change Change… that the
first set of equation is to be kept and the
sign of the second set of equation should
be changed.
In MULTIPLICATION
•For product, the only time that
different exponent can be multiplied,
but if they are different variable then
simply copy the variables. If the
variables have different exponents
then simply add it.
DIVISION OF FUNCTION
••
Their quotient, denoted by , is the function defined by ,
excluding the values of x where g(x) ≠ 0

(there are lot of ways in solving this, like long division,

synthetic division, or simplifying the function, and
sometimes you just need to copy the equation because it
cannot be simplified)
DIVISION OF FUNCTION

𝑓 (𝑥) 2 𝑥 +5 2 𝑥 +5

2
𝑔 (𝑥 ) 𝑥 − 1 ( 𝑥+1)( 𝑥 −1)
Final answer
DIVISION OF FUNCTION ( another sample)
2
𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) = 𝑥 −1

f(x) = x + 1
1 1
𝑓 (𝑥) 𝑥 +1 𝑥 +1

2
𝑔 (𝑥 ) 𝑥 − 1 ( 𝑥+1)( 𝑥 −1) x – 1
1
Final answer
Ask each other

Why is it important to
learn the operation on
functions?
Ask YOURSELF

Where can you apply

the operation on
function?
In GENERAL..
Learning the operation of function is very
important because there are times in life that
we can have the same domain for two
different equation or things, for this situations
we can simply do the operation because
learning math makes things simple, specific
and logical.
