Science Performance Task: Andrea Felize Parenia Grade 7 - Beige

The document discusses different types of mixtures, including homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. A homogeneous mixture appears uniform throughout and has just one phase, while a heterogeneous mixture's components are not uniformly distributed and can be observed separately with more than one phase. Examples of homogeneous mixtures given are coffee and air, while a salad is provided as an example of a heterogeneous mixture. The importance of studying mixtures to understand matter at the atomic level and improve life is also mentioned.

MIXTURE

A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances that aren't chemically joined. For example,
water and salt are separate substances that once mixed, create a mixture - seawater.

Mixtures are the product of the combination of compounds and elements without chemical change, so that
each substance retains its original properties and remains its own substance.

Because of this, mixtures can be separated into their components, becoming individual substances once more
without a chemical reaction. This can be done using specific methods like filtration and distillation. Mixtures
can either be heterogeneous, meaning the components of the mixture can be easily separated,
or homogeneous, meaning the composition is uniform throughout the mixture.

KINDS OF
MIXTURES
HOMOGENEOUS &
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE
Homogeneous Mixture

Homogeneous Mixtures appear uniform to the eye. They consist of a single

phase, be it liquid, gas, or solid, no matter where you sample them or how
closely you examine them. The chemical composition is the same for any
sample of the mixture.

Homogeneous Mixture
Coffee
A homogeneous mixture of water and
filtered coffee grounds, while there may be
some solids left over from the brewing
process, you cannot easily separate the
coffee from the water, making it mainly
homogeneous.

Example of Homogeneous Mixture:
“Chemistry is the science or study of those effects and qualities of matter which
are discovered by mixing bodies variously together, or applying them to one
another with a view to mixture, and by exposing them to different degrees of
heat, alone, or in mixture with one another, in order to enlarge our knowledge of

nature, and to promote the useful arts.

Heterogeneous Mixture

A heterogeneous mixture has components that are not evenly distributed. This
means that you can easily distinguish between the different components. A
heterogeneous mixture has two or more phases. This doesn't necessarily
mean phases of matter, like liquid or solid. For example, a mixture of water
and oil has two liquid phases. Each phase has its own distinct chemical
properties.

Heterogeneous Mixture
Salad
A salad with lettuce, cheese, seeds,
tomatoes, broccoli, and other vegetables is
an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
Each different piece of the salad can be
separated into different parts with minimal
effort.

Importance of Mixture

Mixtures are a common occurrence in our everyday lives. They are the air we breathe, the food
and drink we consume and the fabrics we wear. By studying how chemists distinguish pure
substances from mixtures and solutions, students will start to appreciate how matter is organized
at the atomic level. With this knowledge, we can manipulate matter to improve our health and
quality of life.

Difference of homogeneous and
heterogeneous mixtures
The terms heterogeneous and homogeneous refer to mixtures of materials in chemistry. The difference between heterogeneous and
homogeneous mixtures is the degree to which the materials are mixed together and the uniformity of their composition.
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the
mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout. There is only one phase of matter observed in a homogeneous
mixture at a time. So, you wouldn't observe both a liquid and a gas or a liquid and a solid in a homogeneous mixture. You can't pick
out components of a homogeneous mixture or use simple mechanical means to separate them. You can't see individual chemicals or
ingredients in this type of mixture. Only one phase of matter is present in a homogeneous mixture. A heterogeneous mixture is a
mixture in which the components of the mixture are not uniform or have localized regions with different properties. Different samples
from the mixture are not identical to each other. There are always two or more phases in a heterogeneous mixture, where you can
identify a region with properties that are distinct from those of another region, even if they are the same state of matter (e.g., liquid,
solid).

Summary

- Mixtures are a physical combination of two or more substances or

elements. These substances that are combined together have no chemical
interactions with each other and hence retain their inherent chemical
properties. However, parameters like the melting point or boiling point are
affected by the formation of a mixture.

Summary
Homogeneous Mixture
• Is a type of mixture in which the components are uniformly distributed.
• Is always confused with a substance, but the main difference is proportion. They both might appear
to be the same, but in reality, substances are made of definite compositions. In contrast,
homogeneous mixtures have no fixed composition and contain indefinite amounts of any component.
• None of the components involved in the homogeneous mixture can be detected or observed
separately.

11/3/21 PERFORMANCE TASK IN SCIENCE 15

Summary
Heterogeneous Mixture
• The components of a heterogeneous mixture are visible even to the naked eye. E
• As individual components can be observed, the components of a heterogeneous mixture can be
easily separated by physical methods.
• A heterogeneous mixture has two or more phases.
