WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?
Is a process of interaction and integration, among people,
companies, and government of different nations. A process
driven by international trade and investment and aided by
information technology. This process has effects on the
environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic
development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being
in societies around the world.

We need to understand the strengths and
limitations of different communication media
and how to use each medium in a maximum
effect.
CULTURAL AWARENESS IN SPEECH
The need for cultural awareness is a major impact of globalization on the
required skillset of effective communicators, resulting in the evolution of
communication skills development programs.
Modern entrepreneurs and employees need the ability to catch subtle
nuances of people's manner of speech when communicating across
cultures. Even when two people are speaking the same language, cultural
differences can affect vocabulary, colloquial expressions, voice tone and
taboo topics.
CULTURAL AWARENESS IN SPEECH
In Japanese business culture, for example, it can be considered
rude to ask personal questions in an initial business meeting. In
the U.S., On the other hand, asking personal questions and sharing
personal information can display warmth and openness.
American and Japanese businesspeople who understand this
about each other can communicate in ways that resonate more
effectively with each other.
CULTURAL AWARENESS IN BODY LANGUAGE

Awareness of cultural differences in body language can be just as


important as the nuances of speech. Modern training programs
teach students to understand acceptable speaking distances,
conflict styles, eye contact and posture in different cultures,
accepting that the physical expressions of their own culture are
not universally accepted. Look for training programs that address
these differences to prepare you for face-to-face meetings with
foreign suppliers, customers or team members.
TIME DIFFERENCES

The advent of global collaboration introduces another new dynamic to communication skills -- the need to communicate and share information with people across several time zones. When
people collaborate with others on the other side of the globe, their counterparts are usually at home asleep while they themselves are at work. Today's communication skills development
programs should address the nuances of overcoming this challenge by teaching people to understand the information needs of their colleagues, according to the communication styles of
different countries or cultures. Being able to effectively share information between shifts can make or break the productivity of a geographically dispersed team, making this an important issue
for many companies.

If you were old enough to be semi-cognizant about 30-40
years ago, and you needed to get some sort of
information about the politics of, say china, you'd read the
international section of a newspaper in hopes that a
journalist mentioned something. Or, you'd head over to a
library to find a book about the political landscape of
china, hopefully, one that was recently published, no less!
BUSINESS CONDUCT
Global mass communication has also played an
important role in the world of business. Business
professionals can now chat with colleagues working
almost anywhere in the world. If they need to find an
expert on a niche topic, they can find their number or
email address online, and get in touch with them quickly.
They can even conduct meetings, or business deals, using
video chat with multiple people in different locations!
AVAILABILITY OF INFORMATION
Nowadays, if you want to find information on china's
political landscape, up to the second information as well,
all you have to do is use the search engine google, and
look for it. The amount of information, the timeliness of
it, and the ease of access to it is unprecedented,
nowadays thanks to the technologies and mediums.

The impact of the availability of all of
this information, on a global scale, lies
beyond reference needs like china's
political landscape. The availability of
this information plays an important role
in social awareness.
SOCIAL AWARENESS
Great example of this is global warming which is a global issue; it may be
difficult for some people to understand exactly how so. With global mass
communication technologies, we can see through pictures, videos, writing,
and personal accounts exactly how global warming has impacted
communities in the US, Africa, Pacific Islands, and beyond.
This information can be spread via the platforms mentioned in the
introduction (and many others), and even translated into many languages. In
a very short span of time, many people can jump at the chance, to help
spread the word, about their concerns for the global climate.
