Free Body Diagram: SCES3193 General Physics Topic 3: Force and Motion

A free body diagram shows all the forces acting on an object in a given situation using vectors. It is used to analyze the forces on objects at rest, in free fall, suspended, or accelerating. Examples are given of diagrams for a book at rest on a table, an egg in free fall, a gymnast on a bar suspended from the ceiling, and a book being accelerated across a desk.

Free Body Diagram
• Free-body diagrams are diagrams used to show the
relative magnitude and direction of all forces acting
upon an object in a given situation.

• A free-body diagram is a special example of the vector

diagrams.
A book is at rest on a tabletop. A free-body diagram
for this situation will looks like this :
An egg is free-falling from a nest in a tree. Neglect air
resistance. A free-body diagram for this situation will be:
A gymnast holding onto a bar, is suspended
motionless in mid-air. The bar is supported by two
ropes that attach to the ceiling. FBD for forces
acting on the combination of gymnast and bar is:
A rightward force is applied to a book in order to move it across
a desk with a rightward acceleration. Consider frictional forces.
Neglect air resistance. Diagram the forces acting on the book
