Modern Project Management: Why There Was A Need For Modern Trade Management ?

Modern project management leverages automated tools to help plan, execute, and organize work in a fast-paced environment. Agile project management is a more modern approach that values flexibility, breaking large projects into smaller cycles, and close teamwork and client engagement. Traditional project management takes a more linear approach and is better suited to smaller, less complex projects, while modern approaches can help make work transparent and reduce complexity on complex projects. The POLC model categorizes principles of management into planning, organizing, leading, controlling. Key differences are that modern approaches emphasize teamwork over individual tasks, accept continuous feedback, and measure success through quality deliverables rather than quantity. Popular modern techniques include Kanban, Scrum, and Extreme Programming.

Planning Organizing Leading Controlling

6
Comparing using POLC Model
Planning
● Traditional: Consists primarily of establishing the
schedules people work, assigning individual tasks,
and adjusting for expected and unexpected time away.

● Modern: Breaking down the total work into assignable

units, estimating this work, defining the most efficient
order in which the work should be performed, and then
deploying available staff to specific work packets for
specific windows of time. 7
Organizing

● Traditional: Primarily concerned with creating a

structure and insuring the proper number of
employees for the work.

● Modern: Establish clear roles and responsibilities

needed for the success of their project.

8
Leading

● Traditional: Working in a benevolent manner with

their subordinates, helping them learn how to
accomplish assigned work.

● Modern: Create consensus within the project team,

facilitate group decisions, motivate and create a good
work environment to accomplish the work faster.

9
Controlling

● Traditional: Establishing organizational performance

goals and then determining what each individual’s
contributions should be.

● Modern: Efforts are measured based on creating

quality, not quantity. It is critical to first verify the
completion of promised deliverables. Objective criteria
for completeness and quality must be met before a
deliverable is considered “done.”

then suggestions are given for improvement of the
upcoming sprints throughout the project life cycle.

projects with multiple requirements. 12
