View of Motion

Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer who lived from 1564 to 1642. He discovered that Earth is not the center of the universe by observing Jupiter with his telescope. Galileo also developed the concept of inertia, realizing that Aristotle was incorrect in concluding that objects need a continuous force to remain in motion, as they will stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force like friction. He further determined through experiments that all objects fall at the same rate, regardless of their mass, contradicting Aristotle's view that heavier objects fall faster.

WHO IS GALILEO GALILEI?

• An Italian Astronomer.
• Discovered Jupiter
through his telescope.
Proposed that Earth is 1564-1642
not the center of the
universe.

CONCEPT OF MOTION

AN OBJECT IN A STATE OF
MOTION POSSESSES AN
``INERTIA'' THAT CAUSES IT
TO REMAIN IN THAT STATE OF
MOTION UNLESS AN1564-1642
EXTERNAL FORCE ACT ON IT

CONCEPT OF MOTION

Most objects in a state of motion do NOT

remain in that state of motion. Galileo,
realized that the analysis of Aristotle was
incorrect because it failed to account
properly for a hidden force:1564-1642
the frictional
force between the surface and the object.

(The law of motion for falling
bodies)
of Galileo

ALPINE SKI HOUSE 7

CONCEPT OF FALLING
BODIES
It states that objects fall at the same speed
regardless of weight or shape. Through his
experiments, Galileo countered the pervasive
Aristotelian view, which held that heavier objects
fall faster than lighter objects. The distance
1564-1642
an
object travels, he calculated, is proportional to
the square of the time it takes the object to reach
the ground. ALPINE SKI HOUSE
How The Two Scientists' (Galileo
and Newton) Theories Are Alike:

ALPINE SKI HOUSE 9

Galileo's theory of Inertia is what sparked the
idea of Newton’s Laws of Motion. The first law of
motion is what is similar between the two famous
scientists. Galileo's idea of Inertia helps to
understand the origin of Newton's Law of
1564-1642
Motion.

ALPINE SKI HOUSE

Inertia is the resistance of an object to a change
in its state of motion. Newton’s first law states
that every object tends to stay in motion until
an outside force act upon it. They relate because
Inertia and the first law both include forces
1564-1642
to act
upon it.

According to Aristotle, heavier bodes fell faster
than lighter bodies, but Galileo realized that all
matter was subject to the same laws of motion
and that all bodies would fall or accelerate at the
same speed provided differences in friction or
wind-resistance were eliminated.1564-1642
