< SCARF RACK >

The reason for creating this invention. (MY PROBLEM)

  My client has a problem picking the correct color and material of hijab. She is often late and struggles arriving on-time to
her job, because  she is mostly in a rush searching for her hijab. This wastes her time. The hijab(s) are positioned in an
unorganized way and mostly randomly. She doesn’t have a place to store her hijabs ,and frequently throws her hijab
anywhere . She doesn’t have a time efficient way of putting her hijabs. There is also another problem with keeping the
scarf pins. Since she always losses her scarf pins, she must get new one every day. Which does mean she has to buy new
boxes of pins almost every month- it is loss of her money.

  I aim to solve this problem by manufacturing  my product - a storage place where my client can keep her hijabs and her
scarf pins in a well-ordered way.  This way my client can see all the color and designs of her hijabs. Furthermore she will
certainly be able to find the most suitable and well-matched hijab with her clothing. Which will give her a better fashion
sense and an enhanced experience.  The hijab stand will not only act as a storage place but also as a decoration. It will
make my clients house presentable and organized.

Evaluation:  I located my client's problem and achieve a brief overview- a

solution to solve the problem.
I have identified where the problem exists and who it effects and what research I need to gather about my user's needs and
preferences for the product,  to make it successful.

CLIENT REVIEW ON MOOD BOARD wants

• My client Safa liked some ideas of existing products and color schemes although she didn’t like everything on the mood board, I can pinpoint the ones she
preferred. This gives me feedback and allows my product to be according to her preference and simultaneous to the specification. She chose the
honeycomb (hexagon) rack since it reflected the nature the most. She also chose the casa wooden row hooks. Overall, she loved all designs and color
palette, but she preferred the rack and hooks more than the spiral standing racks. Moreover, Safa did not find the idea of beneficial, since it wouldn’t
clearly help her organize her scarfs in a pleasant way. My client likes the idea of small authentically appealing products.  She also disapproved the idea of
dark dull colors and hanging scarfs with clips. Safa adored the idea of shiny brass metal, therefore I will include that in my final product.

• She chose the honeycomb (hexagon)

rack , she particularly likes the wood
texture and color; which shows nature.
Moreover the hexagon also highlight
nature honeycomb... bees.

Since this color palette has soft bright (vibrant)-

not dull pastel colors, my client found this The color of casa wood fascinates my client,
color palette very attractive. I will use these and this caught her eyes. She liked the hooks
colors in my product. She also liked the brass designs because they are creative and unique.
color.
Evaluation: I have researched information on materials like wood and different types of wood
MATERIAL RESEARCH (WOOD) I can use

• Plywood is manufactured by thin pieces of wood glued together. It is a

versatile wood and is used in interior and exterior products. It is strong
and has high strength, very durable and good at resisting sharp blows.
It is cheap and can be found in ALL countries. There are different type of
plywood

1. Flexi plywood                      3.   laser plywood

2. Boil resistant plywood           4.   marine plywood

•  Oak wood is used for furniture making, flooring and timber frame

buildings. Greater texture- it looks appealing and resistance to ageing. It
is cheap and affordable, since it is one of the most used woods for
furniture and is commonly found in most countries. It can be heavy.

• Pine wood is softer and more workable than most hardwoods.  Pine is a
sturdy wood, however it can easily be dented and scratched. It is not as
strong as oak wood but still grantee durability.
Evaluation: I have researched information on materials like metal and different types of
MATERIAL RESEARCH (METAL) metal I can use

• Steel has high strength and low cost. It is widely available and

common... it is used in many constructions, manufactures, weapons,
tools and machines. Steel is stronger than iron.
Steel's aesthetic appeal- Architects praise the natural beauty of steel.
It is very durable and can withstand extreme conditions

• Aluminum is malleable, corrosion resistant. it is also ductile and

has high electrical and thermal conductivity. used in a huge variety
of products including cans, foils, kitchen utensils and aero plane
parts...this is because it is a soft silvery-white, lightweight metal.

• Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Brass is used for decoration for

its bright gold-like appearance, and in items like locks, gears,
bearings, doorknobs. Brass is widely used because it does closely
resemble gold, that’s why it is pricy. Moreover, brass can easily be
leaned
Evaluation: I have researched information on material- plastic and the type of plastic I can
MATERIAL RESEARCH (ACRYLIC) use (acrylic)

Acrylic is a thermoforming plastic (can be re-heated several times) with

outstanding strength and stiffness.  Acrylics are expensive because they are
much stronger and more durable than any type of glass or plastic. It can
withstand extreme cold and dramatic temperature changes without
shattering. Acrylic has a softer surface, thereby scratching much easier. It Is
very versatile and easy to cut and fabricate. Acrylic is
entirely waterproof. Compared with glass and other plastics, acrylic sheets are
surprisingly lightweight. Available in different range of colors (transparent
and opaque)- clear sheets are transparent than glass and used in everyday
products it is used for signs, sales displays, roof windows, lenses and screens.

PROTOTYPE

These are all the components needed to make

the prototype. There are:

• 12x rectangular sides

• 2x holed hexagon

• 2x plain hexagon

• 6x triangles- to make a shed

• 6x pipes

• Some extra pieces of cardboard to make the

stand and container
2. Here I finished joining each side with
glue to the base- (plain hexagon) so only
the front holed hexagon is missing.

I did the same step (2) for the other hexagon,

but instead I joined the holed hexagon to the
sides.

1. I placed 1 'side' on each edge of the

hexagon, so I know where to join them
using a 60`miter joint .
I attached the pipes to the 2nd
hexagon's holes.
3. I joined the 3 pipes on each
hexagon. I firmly attached 3 pipes
corresponding to each hole creating
a tunnel like entrance.
Cannot be attached

There are several flaps on the pipes,

so it grips more of the cardboard

Fixing error

The pipe is hanging on to the cardboard

without falling off. It will have strenght
to store the scarf without falling

Not strong enough so the

pipes will fall when the
scarf is stored in it.

The pipes cannot be attached on to the cardboard, since there

isn't anything thing strong to keep it contacted with the The pipes now have flaps to they can easily be
cardboard, therefore, they fall off  attached and grip the surface or the cardboard more
4. I inserted the holed heaxgon with the pipes into the
semi hexagon prism to complete it. I had to make sure
it kined perfectly, so I trimmed the edges and made new
mesurement for the hexagon front part. Now it fits
perfectly to the prism

So it would look like this:

I also secured it firmly with glue so it would not be
detached.
I did the same procejure with the 2nd hexagon and
made it like this. So I get to identical looking 3D
hexagonal prism.
These are the 2 almost Identical looking hexagons

6. Here I made a shed with

triangles, that covers half of
both hexagon and connect
with each other.

The shed has different

gradient and is not flat. It
creates dimension for the
rack.

5. Then I glued the 1st heaxgon on the top left

of the 2nd one. However, I realised it was
falling and kept falling and was unbalanced,
so I realised and made a stand that reflected
the architecture of the rest of the design
Different perspectives to highlight the
different features- shed, stand, slots
holes of the scarf stand.

7. I attached a stand to
support this construction.
Its diagonally attached
rather than vertical. (I will
use lap joint to fix the
stand in its place

Close Up Front view

Here I inserted the scarfs in to see if they fit or not. As expected, they do. Some of the scarfs
were popping out so I had to push them more inside since there was extra place

8.  Here I made a semi hexagon

shaped container; using miter
joint and placed and connected it
over the bottom hexagon using a
but joint so its in level with the
top hexagon.
Hinges (tape)
FIXING ERROR

I noticed while making the prototype that the 2 hinges

(acting as tape) were not enough as the lid would be loose
from the edges or the middle (chances of the cabinet door
coming off was likely) . Futhermore, the smaller and less
noticiable the hinges were the more amount of them I
needed to add them to the cabinet to ensure that it opens and
closes easily without getting loose or weak. Therefore, I
added 4 small tapes (hinges) on the edge and 2 in the middle
so make the door secure and tight.
The strip is the same size- a bit smaller than the
width it is the appropriate.

9. This is the the bottom hexagon's top right side. Here a magnetic
strip is placed. This is used to place accessories. The magnetic strip
is connected through sticky tape- there is a sticky side at the
bottom of the magnetic strip and you must peel of the sticker and
stick the strip to the surface (wood)
FINAL PROTOTYPE

•10. This is my final product which functions

perfectly according to its specified order and
satisfies the client needs. It is located at its
desired site and fits flawlessly. Through
many changes it is now functionally
successful like it doesn’t fall over anymore,
and the scarf fit inside the tubes without
falling in (the tubes are strong enough to
carry the scarf). The cabinet door opens
easily without being loose and weak.
Specification point  Explanation

The shape is creative because there is dimension created from the shed and the container
A: neutral colours and creative shape.  and support stand reflect the hexagon's construction style. The color of the shed is very
natural (nature type) green- is grass, earth and yellow- is the sun

E: Easily recyclable.  Since cardboard was used, to make the prototype it can be recycled to make other things.

S: Smooth surfaces, rounded edges.  The hexagon doesn't have curved edges. However, it does have smooth flat sides.

I changed the size, since its more efficient-  the scarf stand can be smaller and save more

side of the hexagon will have a double miter at each end so it can slot in to
make a perfect hexagon.

CAD MODEL (FINAL MODEL)

This is my final design proposal.

I experimented with; different tones, wood types, colors of acrylic, and the
overall architectural shape of the stand. Nevertheless, keeping in mind that
the main piece needs to be able to function appropriately and, be able to be
constructed. However, I chose plywood with a light color, since it would be
the best option as it gives a modern touch- which would be more fitting to my
client as she is from the newer generation aged 16+. The overall shape of the
product encapsulates the elements of nature, buildings, and decore items.
Since it has; a variety of different; geometrical shapes; therefore, making it
unique and eye appealing, which is useful since that's what my client desires.
The plywood, PVC, and acrylic used both have good strength- the plastic isn't
heavy; this is useful as it can withstand a lot of force and is not heavy as it
can be moved around; for decoration purposes. The number of different types
of adhesives used is a lot- this will have increased sturdiness. I think the
design fits the functionality aspect as it has a sufficient amount of space with
different compartments (the holes, the cabinet and magnetic strip) for better
organization. Moreover, it enhances the decorative element since it has a nice
wood color and grain. The brass illuminates the stand, and the acrylic makes
it look vibrant and enthralling.

Client Review Evaluation: here in this slide, I identified what my client thinks about my
product, her opinion, whether she likes it or not.

I'm amazed by the outcome of this product. It definetly looks and gives of different
Client Review
vibes than the design idea (and the outstanding CAD model you made), so this wasn't
what I was prepared for. For example, you have used cardboard to make the whole
product- I do understand your circumstances, but the lack of acrylic (color) makes the
product look bland and simple- not much of a décor item, right? I do admire the shed;
I love the style of it. I really hoped for a transparent container, where I could see
through my items stored, so when I'm in a rush I can quickly get my things. However,
this doesn't mean I don’t depreciate or dislike the product. I'm quite dumbfounded by
the range of ideas you presented me; each one of them were splendid. It was hard to
choose. Nevertheless, even though you had a lock down, you still managed to make a
satisfactory product including majority of the things I specified. I would definetly use
this! I'm sure this won't be the last time we meet, because I will 100% willing to
request you to design and make new things for me in the future. Thank you so much!

Once the final product had been made, I asked

my client to give honest feedback on it.
Evaluation: here in this slide, I tested my final design idea by inserting in
scarfs and items in the container.
Opening the lid with ease-
TESTING THE FINAL DESIGN its very light weight

• After finishing the final design. Few test were done on the rack-
by placing 6 daily used scarfs by my client into the rack and
placing some creams inside the container; to test the results and
see whether the stand will fall, or the scarfs call inwards (for
any error). As expected, the rack functioned properly
successfully storing all 6 scarfs for a long period of time. The
weight of the cream and the scarf wasn't too heavy therefore,
the stand could carry their weight and support the structure.
Moreover, the container's lid opened and closed with ease, so,
its function was achieved. All the scarfs were organized in a
well manner, and items were stored in the storage unit. Not to
forget, the rack still has the décor item appearance, meaning it
looks fine and supplements the room.
Evaluation: here in this slide, I identified what modification I will make if
i make the product again and final evaluation of the product.
FINAL CONCLUSION

•I'm satisfied with the outcome of this product. My design idea coming to life and
physically being present makes me proud and accomplished. Furthermore, despite
being in a lockdown, I made use of the materials I had, it was a sudden change of
plan. Instead of using plywood, acrylic, magnetic tape and brass hinges, I used tape,
cardboard instead. During the making I decided to change the interior- the way the
pipes were attached inside so they could be firm and stronger.
•IMPROVEMENTS: modification and changes
One of the things that I'm really desperate to change if I make this product next time
is the material. I wouldn't use cardboard, instead I prefer plywood (so the structure
can be sturdy and durable very long lasting), acrylic (for aesthetics and color, décor
element) and even metal for more of antique touches, not forgetting PVC pipes which
will store the scarfs instead on paper since they are stronger. I would stick with the
current shape of the rack. Instead of making the product at home, with less
proffesional equipment and lack of materials I would rather make it at a workshop,
where I can access tools and all the new prefered materials. I would make changes to
the stand so it can be more reliable and sturdier. I do like the weight of the rack, its
easily moveable and the size seems perfect; however, I would make modifications to
the color of the shed maybe add replaceable shed with different color so my client can
personalize her rack when ever she feels like.
