Design of Purlins: With Engr. Mark Lehi P. Palmes Faculty-RMMC Civil Engineering Program Review Lecturer

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. Compute wind load normal to roof: Pn = 0.6V^2 = 0.6(178)^2 = 0.6 x 31664 = 19000 Pa = 190 kPa 2. Compute max bending stress in purlins: Mn = Pl^2/8 = (70+190)x8^2/8 = 448 kN-m σb = Mn/Z = 448x10^6/(100x150^3/12) = 37.3 MPa 3. Compute max shear stress in purlins: Vt = Pl/2 = (70+190)x8

DESIGN OF PURLINS
Loads carried by purlins:
Purlins is analyzed and designed based on the following loadings (might be all considered):
a. Self Weight
b. Weight of Roofing transferred to purlins
b. Wind Load
c. Ceiling Load
d. Live Load
e. Any other load present in the roof as carried by purlins
Wind Load: (Duchemins Formula)

 in kPa

  in kPa

Where:
P = wind pressure perpendicular to vertical surface.
Pn = wind pressure perpendicular to normal surface.
V = Velocity of the wind per NSCP in kph.
DESIGN OF PURLINS

Problem/Online Work:

A roof truss having a span of 8m. A height of 2m. is placed at 4m apart. Purlins are spaced on top of
the chord of the trusses at a spacing of 800 mm O.C.

Wt. of the roof = 70 Pa

Velocity of the wind = 178 kph
Weight of Purlins = 5.5 kN/m3
E = 17300 Mpa
Purlins Size = 100mm x 150mm

a. Compute the wind load normal to the roof in kPa.

b. Compute the max. bending stress of the purlins.
c. Compute the max. stress of the purlins.
d. Determine the maximum deflection on the purlins.
