Tutorial 2 (Answers)

This document contains a tutorial on industrial pollution abatement with 7 questions and their answers. The questions cover topics like calculating threshold odor number, biochemical oxygen demand, coliform counts, alkalinity determination, and analyzing total and volatile solids in wastewater. The answers provide step-by-step workings to determine values for parameters like BOD, TON, concentrations of ions, and concentrations of total solids and dissolved solids based on given test data.

Q.1 Find the threshold odor number (TON) when odor is just barely detected in a flask containing 40
mL of sample water.

Answer

A+B 200 mL 200

TON = =   5
A Sample volume (mL) 40
Where, A is the volume of sample water and B is the volume of odor-free water added to make
200 mL of total water.
Q.2 The BOD5 of a wastewater is determined to be 400 mg/L at 20oC. The k value at 20oC is known to be
0.23 per day. What would be BOD7 value if tests were run at 15oC?

Answer

Answer: Contd..
Q.3. A sample of water requires 113 mL of distilled water to render the odor barely detectable.
What is the volume of the sample, and what is the TON?
Answer:

A + 113 = 200
Or A = 87 mL (Ans.)
A+B 87  113 200
TON = =   2.3 (Ans.)
A 87 87
Q.4. Ten millilitres sample is pipetted directly into a 300 mL incubation bottle. The initial DO of the
diluted sample is 9.0 mg/L and its final DO is 2.0 mg/L The initial DO of the diluted sample is 9.0
mg/L, but the final DO is 8.0 mg/L. The temperature of incubation is 20oC. If the sample is incubated
for 5 days, What is the BOD5 of the sample?

Answer:
Q.5. A standard multiple tube fermentation test is run on a sample of water from a surface stream. The results of the analysis for
the confirmed test are shown below. Determine the most probable number of coliform organisms.

Size of sample, No. positive No. negative

mL
10 4 1
1 2 3
0.1 1 4
0.01 1 4
0.001 0 5

Answer
Table: MPN index and 95% confidence limits for various combinations of positive results when
five tubes are used per dilution (10 mL, 1.0 mL, 0.1 mL)
Q.6. A 200-mL sample of water has an initial pH of 10. Thirty millilitres of 0.02 N H2SO4 is required to
titrate the sample to pH 4.5. Find total alkalinity as CaCO3. If the pH of 8.3 is reached at 11 mL of
acid. Determine the concentration of OH-, CO32- and HCO3¯.

Q.7. The following test results were obtained for a wastewater sample taken at the head-works to a
wastewater treatment plant. All of the tests were performed using a sample size of 50 mL.
Determine the concentration of total solids, total volatile solids, suspended solids, volatile
suspended solids, total dissolved solids, and total volatile dissolved solids. The samples used in the
solids analysis were all either evaporated, dried, or ignited to constant weight.

Tare mass of evaporating dish = 53.5433 g
Mass of evaporating dish plus residue after evaporation at 1050C = 53.5794 g
Mass of evaporating dish plus residue after ignition at 550 0C = 53.5625 g
Tare mass of Whatman GF/C filter after drying at 1050C = 1.5433 g
Mass of Whatman GF/C filter and residue after drying at 1050C = 1.5554 g
