Systems of Linear Equations by Substitution Method

The document provides examples for solving systems of linear equations algebraically using the substitution method. It shows the steps of solving for one variable in one equation, substituting that expression into the other equation, solving the resulting equation for the other variable, and checking the solutions. Examples are provided to demonstrate solving systems of two equations with two unknown variables.

Solving Systems of Linear

Equations by Algebraically
(substitution method)
Example #1 : p.147
7x + 2y = 7
4x – y = 4
Step 1 : Solve for
one variable.

4x - y = 4
- y = - 4x + 4
y = 4x – 4

Step 2 : Substitute
the expression into
the other equation.
7x + 2y = 7
7x + 2(4x – 4) = 7
7x + 8x – 8 = 7
Example #1 :
7x + 2y = 7
4x – y = 4
Step3. Solve the
Equation.
7x + 8x – 8 = 7
15x = 15
x=1
Step4. Obtain the
value of the second
variable.
4x – y = 4
4(1) – y = 4
–y=4–4
–y =0
y =0
Example #1 :
7x + 2y = 7
4x – y = 4
Step5. Checking the
solutions.
{( 1, 0 )}
Eq. 1
7x + 2y = 7
7(1) + 2(0) = 7
7=7
Eq. 2
4x – y = 4
4(1) – 0 = 4
4=4
Example #2 : page 148
x – 2y = 18
x + 11y= 5
Step 1 : Solve
for one variable.

x – 2y = 18
x = 2y + 18

Step 2 : Substitute
the expression
into the other
equation.
x + 11y= 5
(2y + 18) + 11y = 5
Example #2 : page 148
x – 2y = 18
x + 11y= 5
Step 3 : Solve
for one variable.
2y + 18 + 11y = 5
2y+11y = -18 +5
13y = - 13
y = -1
Step 4 : Solve for
the other variable.
(x) in any eq.
x – 2y = 18
X – 2(-1) = 18
x + 2 = 18
x = 18 – 2
x = 16
Example #2 : page 148
x – 2y = 18
x + 11y= 5
Step5. Checking the
solutions.
{(16 , -1)}
Eq. 1
x – 2y = 18
16 – 2 (- 1) = 18
16 + 2= 18
18 = 18
Eq. 2
x + 11y= 5
16 + 11(-1) = 5
16 - 11 = 5
5=5
Example #3 : (Guided Visible Quiz)
x + 6y = 9
x - 6y = -3
Step 1 : Solve Step3. Solve the Step5. Checking the
for one variable. Equation. solutions.
(-6y + 9) - 6y = - 3 {(3 , 1)}
x + 6y = 9 -6y -6y= -9 -3 Eq. 1
x = -6y + 9 -12y= -12 x + 6y= 9
y=1 3+6(1) = 9
Step 2 : Substitute Step4. Obtain the 9= 9
the expression value of the second Eq. 2
into the other variable. x – 6y = -3
equation. x + 6y = 9 3 – 6(1) = -3
x - 6y = -3 x + 6(1) = 9 -3 = -3
(-6y + 9) - 6y = - 3 x =9-6
x =3
