On Chilled Beam System Using Geothermal Energy

The document presents information on radiant cooling using geothermal energy. It discusses passive and active chilled beams, which are HVAC systems that cool buildings through cold surfaces using natural or forced convection of chilled water. The document also describes a case study of a hybrid system using radiant cooling with geothermal energy loops buried underground. This design can save over 50% of power consumption compared to traditional HVAC systems and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

PRESENTATION ON

RADIANT COOLING USING

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Air Conditioning

By Mohd Sayeeduddin Loqman

INTRODUCTION
 A chilled beam is a type of HVAC system designed to heat or
cool large buildings
 Developed in Norway

 It is a technology used to cool buildings based on the sensible

heat absorption through cold surfaces (radiant panels).

 The operation is based on natural convection.

 Chilled water is circulated through the radiant panels using

pump.
 Water has roughly 3,500 times the energy transport capacity of
air. Hydronic system can transport a given amount of cooling
with less than 5% of the energy required to deliver cool air
with fans

Hot air rises

By definition, heat is a form of energy that flows from a

point at one temperature to another point at a lower
temperature
MAIN PRINCIPLES OF PASSIVE CHILLED BEAM

 Works on natural convection

  Good air circulation is essential for the
operation of passive chilled beams
 Good solution to provide sensible cooling in labs
or other spaces where processes generate high
heat
Passive Radiant Cooling

PASSIVE RADIANT COOLING

 Arranged at regular intervals along the ceiling

plane to provide uniform cooling to the occupied
space below
  Consists of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger,
contained in a housing , that is suspended from
the ceiling
  Chilled water passes through the tubes

 Warm air from the space rises toward the ceiling

PASSIVE RADIANT COOLING

 The air surrounding the chilled beam is cooled

 It descend back toward the floor

  This allows a passive chilled beam to provide

space cooling without the use of a fan
ACTIVE CHILLED BEAM
ACTIVE CHILLED BEAM
 Have ductwork supplied to them
 Through duct work specific amount of primary air is
provided to the pressurized plenum within the device
 The air is discharged through induction nozzles

 Mix with entrained air, and ventilate the room

ACTIVE CHILLED BEAM
 Fresh air from the air handler via duct work is
supplied into the pressure chamber
  Pressure in the chamber causes the air to rush
out through the nozzles at a high velocity into
the mixing chamber
  Due to nature of the nozzles, a low pressure
system is created above the coil
 Conditioned air from the space mixes with the
fresh air
ACTIVE CHILLED BEAM
 Supplied back into the room through linear slots located
along the casing of the beam
 The air gets supplied back to the space through the linear
slots at a higher velocity and at its coldest state

A CASE STUDY
WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
 We take the largely constant temperature of the earth
beneath our feet and start from that point to begin
heating or cooling our home or business.
 As per GRIHA the temperature of earth below 20 to 30
feet remains constant round year at around 28 to 31
degree Celsius
 Because we are not using an outside fan, which passes
already hot summer air over a coil that is sitting in the
summer sun, we are saving energy.
 How much energy is determined by the difference
between that outside air and the ground temperature.
This difference could be between 10 to 13 degrees in
summer.
WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
 The length of the loops is determined by the amount of
energy needed i.e. the size of the building and its heating
and cooling requirements

 The building envelope (air sealing, insulation and fresh

air make up) is critical to sizing the system correctly

 water and ethanol refrigerant (grain alcohol) circulate

through the loops
WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
•Two types of looping system can be used for circulation
of water which acts as a refrigerant to carry heat from
conditioned space to earth (which acts as a heat sink).
•As per LEED data 40% of energy can be saved by using
Geothermal cooling or heating system
CONCLUSION
 By designing and analyzing a hybrid system of Radiant
cooling which works on Geothermal energy we can save
power consumption marginally (more than 50%)
 Active chilled beam reduces primary air flow
requirement
 The lifecycle cost of chilled beam system is lower
than in other cooling systems
 The energy consumption of beam system is low

 The chilled beam system reduces carbon dioxide

emission to a greater extent
