The atmosphere has five layers from closest to farthest from Earth's surface: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The troposphere contains most water vapor and air movement. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer which absorbs harmful radiation. The mesosphere has thin cold air where meteors burn up. The thermosphere is where the space shuttle and auroras are found. The exosphere is where satellites orbit.

Layers of The Atmosphere
The atmosphere has five layers from closest to farthest from Earth's surface: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The troposphere contains most water vapor and air movement. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer which absorbs harmful radiation. The mesosphere has thin cold air where meteors burn up. The thermosphere is where the space shuttle and auroras are found. The exosphere is where satellites orbit.
• 10 km. above the Earth's surface. • As the altitude (height) increases, the temperature decreases. • Contains most of water vapor. • Air is constantly moving. STRATOSPHERE • 20-50 km above , the temperature increases gradually. • In this layer we find the ozone layer. • Ozone layer- absorbs much of the sun's harmful radiation. MESOSPHERE • 50 km and 80 km above the Earth's surface. • As the altitude increases, the temperature decreases. • Air in this layer is very thin and cold. • Meteors and rock fragments burn up in the mesosphere. THERMOSPHERE • Between 80 km. and 110 km. above the earth surface. • Space shuttles fly in this area and it is also where aurora is found. EXOSPHERE • 500 km. to 1000 km. from the earth's surface. • Satellites are stationed in this area. More than three quarters of earth is made up of nitrogen while one fifth is oxygen. The remaining 1 % is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor and ozone.
These gases not only produce
important weather features such as cloud and rain, but also have considerable influence on overall climate of the earth, through the greenhouse effect and global warming. Two major Division in the way gases are mixed in the aatmosphere Homosphere- The gases mostly N2 are well mixed. (homo means same) Heterosphere- No mixing of gases takes place. (hetero means different) referring to the unmixed gases in the region.) Two layers of the atmosphere based on the distribution of the very reactive form of oxygen called ozone and electrically charged particles called ions. • Ozonosphere- the bottom 70 km of the atmosphere where ozone is found. »Stratospheric ozone- refers to the ozone in the so- called ozone layer in the stratosphere. »Ground level ozone- refers to the ozone ormed near earth's surface. Two layers of the atmosphere based on the distribution of the very reactive form of oxygen called ozone and electrically charged particles called ions. • Ionosphere- region in the atmosphere sufficiently ionized by solar ultraviolet adiation. Ions- electrically charged particles. Activity Timeee!!!!
