unique piece of equipment in sepak takraw. Also, having a net that is weather resistant is important because you probably do not want to put it up and take it The last thing you’ll need is down every time you want to a net. play. What do we look for in a net? Durability. HOW TO PLAY SEPAK TAKRAW? ✘ Each team occupies one side of the court. A coin flip decides which team serves first.
✘ A team will serve for an entire set (set =
21 pts.). After the first set is completed, the other team serves for the next set. The team that wins two sets first is the winner. ✘ The set begins when the setter/ bowler/ tosser tosses the ball to the Tekong who kicks the ball over the net to the opposing team. The setter and striker must stay in their designated space until the ball crosses the net. Teams have 3 touches to return the ball over the net. ✘ The touches that are allowed are the same as in soccer. Players are able to use their entire bodies with the exception of the arm – from shoulder to fingertip.
✘ Points are scored as one team commits
faults, which brings us to the rules of the game. RULES OF SEPAK TAKRAW BASIC RULES ✘ The sepak takraw rules are simple, especially if you are familiar with volleyball and football (soccer). The object is to score points against the other team by touching their side of the court with the ball, or by the other team committing a “fault”.
✘ A “fault” is committed when one team does
one of the following: ✘ Kicks the ball out of bounds ✘ A team exceeds 3 touches before returning the ball across the net ✘ Touches ball with arm or hand ✘ Tekong (server) makes contact without being on the ground on a serve ✘ Tekong does not make contact on serve ✘ Touching the net ✘ The ball hits the ceiling or ground SEPAK TAKRAW SCORING
✘ Knowing how to keep score is
fundamental when learning how to play sepak takraw. Scoring is simple: Avoid faults.
✘ The previous section outlines sepak
takraw rules. A point is scored whenever one or more of the sepak takraw rules are breached. ✘ If a team lets the ball hit the ground on their side, then the other team receives a point. If a player touches the ball with their arm or hand, the other team gets a point. If a player touches the net, then the other team gets a point. If a team doesn’t return the ball within 3 touches, then the other team gets a point – so on and so forth… ✘ Each set (game) is played to 21. Teams must win by two points. In the event that neither team has won by two points, the first team to 25 wins the game. Teams play the best out of three sets, and teams’ alternate serving with each set. TECHNIQUE AND SKILLS ✘ Often involving agility, flexibility, and strength, sepak takraw is a sport that combines many different kicks, spikes, and serves. These range from basic ones that most beginners would be able to pick up easily, to the more acrobatic kinds that require long periods of training and practice to execute flawlessly. Inside kick ✘ Regarded as the most common and basic kick in sepak takraw, the inside kick is used for controlling the ball. This is done with the inside of the foot, as its name implies. Stand with your feet apart, and bend your supporting leg a little. Hit the ball with the inside of your other foot. Outside kick ✘ Not very commonly used, the outside kick is a defensive kick that propels the ball upwards. To execute an outside kick, the outside of your foot must make contact with the ball as your knee bends inwards. The entire kicking leg should make a right angle at the knee, with the calf and foot pointing outwards. Knee kick ✘ The knee kick actually utilizes the thigh - the ball is hit with the part of the thigh that is just above your knee. The stance is reminiscent of marching, but your knees would have to be raised as high as possible. This kick is usually done by players receiving a serve. Header ✘ Not unlike a football header, a header spike in sepak takraw involves the use of the forehead to make the ball fly, especially when it’s too high in the air for your kick to reach it. This technique is used for both serving and striking. Horse kick serve ✘ A horse kick serve is difficult to accomplish, and requires a high level of skill and flexibility. The horse kick actually refers to a high kick; kick as high as you need the ball to go, and, using your foot, hit the ball backwards over your shoulder or head. Sunback spike ✘ A sunback spike is similar to the horse kick, but done in a jump. To master this, take off on one leg and kick the other up (a scissor kick) while still in the air. Before finishing the jump-kick, hit the ball over your shoulder or head with your other leg. Roll spike ✘ A simple roll spike refers to jumping on one leg and flipping in the direction that you want your ball to move, all while remaining airborne. Using the other foot, kick the ball over your opposite shoulder. You should perform the entire spike while still in the air, only landing after you have made contact with the ball.
