hard work and firm determination.
Deepwater Summary
Deep Water is an extract taken from the book Men and Mountains by
William Douglas.

The chapter is about the writer’s journey of overcoming the fear of

water with sheer determination and will power, which is deeply rooted in
him since childhood.

As a child, when he was 3 or 4 years old, he went to the beach in

California with his father. He got scared by the might of the huge waves
which swept over him and it instilled a fear in his sub – conscious mind.

A few years later, he joined a swimming pool where  he was pushed into
the pool by another boy and experienced death closely.
Many years after that incident, he stayed away from water but the
desire to go fishing and swimming  was strong enough to overcome his
fear. He learned swimming with the help of an instructor who ensured
that he will able to swim in huge lakes and waterfalls also.

Still, when he would swim, the fear from his childhood embedded in his
sub-conscious mind would grip him over and over again. He challenged his
fear in the face of it and finally conquered it.

William realized that death is peaceful and it is the fear of death that is
terrorizing. His will to live life grew intensely as he had overcome his
fear and started living fearlessly.

To sum up, Deep Water summary, we learn that if we are determined

enough and have the courage, we can overcome any fear that comes our
way without letting the fear overpower
Risk and Safety Measures
 Risk of diseases -
•  Many bacteria survive in pools circulating among swimmers to spread illness.

  Safety measures -
• Swimmers  refrain  using a pool if sick or have open wound
• They use hose or Shower to rinse their body before and after using
pool

 Risk of chemical exposure-

• Chlorine dries, irritates skin and also aggravates asthma.
• The water if swallowed causes digestion problems and may lower the
immunity.
Safety measures
• By acknowledging the fact that the chemicals are
used at the right level.
By following the instructions properly before
treating the pool.

        Risk of injuries
•  Most injuries happen due to pressure to  perform the
same stroke over and over again.
• Practicing one of the four strokes butterfly, backstroke,
freestyle, or breaststroke can cause risk of injury in the back
& shoulders, knee & hip pain or tendonitis.
        Safety measures
•  Cross training can help relieve the chance of injury and
diversifies training.
•  A swimmer who cycles, runs, does yoga, or even weight
lifts reduces impact on certain muscle groups which
lessens the chance of injury.
Different Styles of Swimming

Breaststroke:
Swimmer leans on the chest, arms breaking
the surface of the water slightly, legs always
underwater, and the head underwater for the
second half of the stroke.

Backstroke:
Initially, the swimmer lies flat on the back;
arms stretched with extended fingertips, and
legs extended backward.

 Freestyle:
Freestyle swimming implies the use of legs and
arms for competitive swimming. The competitor
circles the arms forward in alternation, kicking the
feet up and down (flutter kick).
Butterfly:

The swimmer swims on chest, with both arms

moving symeterically, accompanied by the
butterfly kick. It consists of synchronous arm
movement with a synchronous leg kick.

Medley:

Medley is a combination of four different swimming

styles—butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and
freestyle.

The story 'Deep Water' by William O Douglas is significant as it provides a moral to the readers to
overcome their fears and anxiety. These are the frequent situations in which almost all of us get
stuck. Therefore, this story helps us a lot to co-relate with our personal situations and get the
better of ourselves.
