Week 3 - Deliverables

I. Submit Case Write-Up on Oakland Athletics by Sunday 11:59 pm

This is an individual assignment and is worth 30 points.
Access and read the case in the Course Pack.
Write a 500–750 word paper, double-spaced, which includes the following:
• Brief introduction
• Overview of competitive situation
• Identification of key problems facing the firm
• Make two (2) business-level strategy recommendations for the firm. Separate these into separate
paragraphs, and for each, explain how the recommendation addresses the problem(s) that you
identified, what issues could possibly undermine this recommendation.
• Select one of your two recommendations which you believe to be superior to the other, and in a
paragraph, describe how the firm should go about implementing this strategy.

II. Submit Project Milestone for Week 3 by Sunday 11:59 pm
This is the next phase of your group project and is worth 50 points.
You will be doing a Five Forces Analysis for the industry (or one of the industries) in which your
chosen company competes.
Write 2-3 pages, double-spaced, and include the following:
• one paragraph that provides a definition of the industry and its products, markets and technologies
• a paragraph on EACH of the five forces, addressing a few elements from each force and whether
each element more of a threat or an opportunity to you and the other competitors in your industry
• one paragraph on the business-level strategy(ies) that your firm is pursuing in this industry,
including how those strategies are helpful in eliminating identified barriers to your company's profit
potential and in ensuring that your firm remains competitive in this industry
Use at least five sources and use APA formatting to cite in the text and for your list of references
Put all group members’ names on the paper, save it as MGMT590_GroupName_Week2_Milestone,
and have one group member submit through the Assignments link on the CANVAS course site.

Case Write-Up
From the information in the case, you will be able to identify threats and opportunities from the general environment (white circle on previous slide)
as well as the industry environment (gold circle). Threats from these environments, along with any weaknesses or mis-steps that you find within
organization, should form the basis for your recommendations. Below on the left are the various business strategies types, so each of your
recommendation should be geared toward one of the approaches (as I see it, this is a simplified version of SWOT Analysis as a way to formulate
strategies at the business level).
Below on the right is a graphic for strategic positioning. As firms invest (C, for costs) in the various functions in the course of getting a product to
market, they expect the customer to attach a certain value to that product (V) and this is what the firm believes it can charge. The difference
between C and V is the org’s value, or competitive advantage. The P is for price, if the firm chooses to charge less than what the consumer is
willing to pay (V), then the competitive advantage is represented by the difference between P and C. Nonetheless, that difference is the dark blue
shading and where that shading is positioned is…well, strategic positioning. To explain further, Firm D shows positioning closer to differentiation,
and would be more of a differentiator if V were even higher. Firm C is a bit more of a cost leader, and would be more of a cost leader if V and
hence P were lower than the $1200.

Group Project – Week 3 Milestone
For this assignment, you are not just touching on the Five Forces Model, as this is what the assignment focuses
on. Note from the picture below that four of the forces contribute to the fifth, which is the competitive rivalry.
Rivalry is the important component here, as it reflects the stage of the industry in its evolutionary cycle, determines
prices and shifts in strategies, and it determines who stays in the industry and who goes. Typically, firms with
strong competitive positions (i.e. well-established business models/strategies) can weather unattractive industries
(meaning those with more threats than opportunities and presumably less profitability) much better than those
firms which are stuck-in-the-middle.
