Using The Chart, Fill in The Column As Indicated:: Activity 1

The document provides an overview of different perspectives on reading and challenges in teaching reading. It includes a chart that defines four views of reading: as a dynamic process, as a skill, as a process of comprehension, and as meaning-making. The document then asks reflection questions on how learners should be taught to read and why frustrated readers may exist in higher grades. Finally, it prompts the reader to develop a professional development plan to stop, sustain, and start practices in their reading class.

Reflection Questions
1. Learning all these, how should learners be taught to read?
One of the most common ways to teach reading is via the sounding out method in which kids
are encouraged to read aloud, pronouncing each letter or group of letters until they recognize
the word by sound.

2. Why do you think we still have frustrated readers even in the

higher grades?
Struggling readers get frustrated because most reading interventions lack an emphasis on underlying cognitive skills.
Inferior programs don't provide the right help. Prerequisite brain skills are missing in some children because of genetic
or environmental influences. 2
