Measuring Period AND Frequeny Using Cro: Alternating Current

This document discusses how to use a cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) with a function generator to measure the period and frequency of an alternating current signal. The function generator output is connected to the CRO vertical input to display a sinusoidal wave. The period is measured by determining the horizontal distance between peaks and multiplying by the time base setting. Taking the reciprocal of the period gives the frequency. Examples are provided where the distance between peaks is measured on the CRO screen and used along with the time base setting to calculate the period and from that the frequency.

MEASURING PERIOD

FREQUENY USING CRO
CATHODE RAY OSCILLOSCOPE
CRO WITH FUNCTION GENERATOR

01.
INTRODUCTION
FREQUENCY MEASUREMENT
For this part of the experiment, you need a general purpose
function generator.

CATHODE RAY OSCILLOSCOPE

SINUSIODAL WAVE
*To begin the experiment, connect the OUTPUT terminal of
the function generator to the Y-input of the CRO.

*Time base signal is connected to x – plates(internally

connected).

*We get a sinusoidal wave on the screen, after the

adjustment of (Y-plates) and (X-plates).

*The (l) between two successive peaks is noted. When

this horizontal length (l) is multiplied by the time
base(m)(i.e. sec/div), we get the time-period(T).

*The reciprocal of the time-period(1/T) gives the

frequency(f). This can be verified with the frequency,
measured by the multi-meter.

PERIOD CALCULATION:
3.0 x (0.50x10^-3) =
1.5x10^-3 seconds
Example – 2️⃣
*Frequency is measured by finding the 'wavelength' of the
waveform along the time-line.

*In other words to find the period (T) of the wave (the time
interval for one complete oscillation.

*T = (horizontal dist. on screen in cm) x (time-base setting).

*Once T has been measured, the frequency f can then be found.

The period T is inversely proportional to frequency f :period
related to frequency
Example – 2️⃣
• Example: In the example above, measuring from the first crest
to the second horizontally, the distance is 3.3 cm.]
• T = (horizontal dist. on screen in cm) x (time-base setting)

• If the time-base is 2ms/cm (2 x 10-3 sec./cm), then the period

(T) is:
•  T = 3.2 x 2 x 10-3 = 6.4 x 10-3 secs.
•  Hence the frequency (f) is:

f = (6.4 x 10-3)-1 = 156.25 Hz
