Microprogrammed Control Unit: Presented By: - Akshat Gupta 35225502019 BCA - 203

1. A microprogrammed control unit stores its binary control variables in memory. It generates a set of control signals to select processing paths and is easier to design, test, and modify than a hardwired control unit. 2. The control unit consists of control signals, control variables, control words stored in a control memory, microinstructions that specify control signals, and a microprogram which is a sequence of microinstructions. 3. The microprogrammed control unit structure includes an instruction register, control address register, control memory, control buffer register, and uses a clock and sequence logic to generate internal and external control signals.

Introduction To Microprogrammed Control Unit

A control unit whose binary control variables are stored in memory is called microprogrammed control
unit.

Generates a set of control signals.

Easy to design, test & implement.
Flexible to modify.
Some Important Terms

It consists set of : -
1. Control signals .
2.Control variable.
3.Control word.
4.Control memory.
5.Micro Instructions.
6.Micro Program.
Some Important Terms(Contd.)

1.Control Signals : - It is group of bits, those bits are used to select the path whether it has
to go to Multiplexer or the decoder or to the ALU’s.
2.Control Variable : -Binary variable specifies micro operations is said to be control
variable.
3.Control Word : - A word whose individual bits represent various control signals.
4.Micro Instructions : -It contains control words stored in control memory & also specifies
control signals for execution of microoperation.
5.Micro program : -A sequence of micro instructions is called a micro program, which is
stored in Rom or Ram called a Control Memory(CM).
