Introduction to Computer Networking

 What is Data communication ?

 What is network ?
 What is computer network ?
 Why we need computer network ?
 What are the thing we need for data communication ?
 What are the connections in data communications ?
Data Communication
 Data communications are the transfer of data from one device to another device via
some form of transmission medium
 Five Components for Data Communication
 Sender
 Receiver
 Message
 Protocol
 A protocol is a set of rules that govern data communication. A protocol define what is
communicated , how is communicated and when is communicated. Syntax refer the structure of
the data , semantics refers the meaning of each bits, Timing refers when data send and how fast
 Transmission Media
 Wired
 wireless
Data Communication
Contd.
 Text, number , images, audio, and video are different forms of Information.
 Data flow between two devices can occur in one of three ways:
 Simplex : refers to one-way communications where one party is the transmitter and the
other is the receiver.
 Half duplex: refers to two-way communications where only one party can transmit at
a time
 Full duplex : Refers to the transmission of data in two directions simultaneously. For
example, a telephone is a full-duplex device because both parties can talk at once.
Computer Network

 A network is a set of communications devices connected by media link for sharing

(exchange) resources, data and applications.
 A Network can be categories by its size.
 Two primary categories: Local Area Network and Wide Area Network. (discuss
later)
Types of connections

 point to point
 point-to-point connection the link is only between two devices i.e. a sender and a
receiver
 Multipoint
 The multipoint connection is a connection established between more than two devices.
There are four basic topologies possible:
 Star, bus, ring and mesh
