Fundamental Operations On Integers

This document discusses fundamental operations on integers including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It provides examples and step-by-step instructions for performing each operation. For addition and subtraction, it explains how to handle integers with like and unlike signs. For multiplication and division, it notes that the sign of the final answer depends on whether the signs of the integers being operated on are the same or different. Try examples are provided throughout for the reader to practice each type of integer operation.

Fundamental Operations on

Integers
Integers are zero and all the positive and negative whole numbers.
Integers can also be used in real life situations.
Examples:
Addition of Integers
Like signs:
To get the sum of two integers with like signs and use the
common sign.

-2 + -5 = -7 both negative

3+ 5=8 both positive

Try These!
-3 + -10 = -2 + -9 =
6+2= 5+3=
-2 + -2 = -3 + -3 =
-4 + -5 = -5 + -6 =
-9 + -7 = -6 + -8 =
Addition of Integers
Example:
To get the sum of two integers with different signs:
-13 + 6 = -7
1. Get the absolute value of the two numbers. |−13| = 13 |6| = 6
2. Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger 13 – 6 = 7
absolute value.
3. Use the sign of the number having the greater Since -13 has a greater
absolute value. absolute value than 6, use
the negative sign for the
final answer.

So, -13 + 6 = -7
Try These!
12 + -10 = 2 + -9 =
-2 + 8 = 3 + -8 =

-6 + 8 =
-9 + 7 =
Subtraction of Integers
Subtraction of Integers
• To get the difference of two integers, change the sign of the
subtrahend by its
• opposite and then follow the rules of addition.

Example : 6 – 8 = -2
Change the sign of the subtrahend by its opposite, and then proceed to addition.

6–8→ 6 + (-8)
Adding unlike signs:
6 + (–8) = -2
Try These!
-12 – 11 = -10 – 11 =

-15 – (-10)= -15 – (-9)=

-16 – (-26)= -16 – (-25)=

Multiplication and Division of
Integers
Multiplication and Division of Integers
• Multiplying and dividing integers are similar to multiplying and
dividing whole numbers. The only difference is that with integers, you
must indicate the sign to the final answer.
• If the signs of the numbers you are multiplying or dividing are the
same, then the
• answer will be positive. If the signs are different, then the answer will
be negative.
Unlike sign = negative Unlike sign = negative
5 x (-3) = -15 (-5) x (-3) = 15
(-5) x (3) = -15 (5) x (3) = 15
