INTRODUCTION
Sustainable development is a complex concept.
Done by WCED(world commission for environment and development)-1987.
Under Dr.Gro Harlem Brundtlant- Prime Minister of Norway.
Commission concludes: if we continue to use up natural resources as we do at
present, we can expect a decline in the quality of life.
To halt this decline, the commission coined the term “sustainable
development”.
WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
“Meeting the needs of present generation without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
Sustainable Development = Economic Development
+ Environment Protection
+ Social Reform
+ People’s Empowerment.
United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development 1992 (Earth Summit)

Participants: 172 governments + 2,400 representatives of NGOs.
Agenda 21 : Concrete action plan for governments and
