What is a computer virus?
A computer virus is a type of malicious code or program
written to alter the way a computer operates and is
designed to spread from one computer to another. A virus
operates by inserting or attaching itself to a legitimate
program or document that supports macros in order to
execute its code. In the process, a virus has the potential
to cause unexpected or damaging effects, such as harming
the system software by corrupting or destroying data.
Antivirus Effectiveness
Studies in December 2007 showed that the effectiveness
of antivirus software had decreased in the previous year,
particularly against unknown or zero-day attacks. The
computer magazine cut found that detection rates for
these threats had dropped from 4050% in 2006 to 20-30%
in 2007.
At that time, the only exception was the NOD32 antivirus,
which managed a detection rate of 68 percent Anti-virus
programs are not always effective against new viruses,
even those that use no signature-based methods that
should detect new viruses. The reason for this is that the
virus designers test their new viruses on the major anti-
virus applications to make sure that they are not detected
before releasing them into the wild.
