Network Devices and Their Uses

Here are the answers to the quiz questions: 1. MODEM stands for Modulator-Demodulator. 2. A hub broadcasts all data to all ports, while a switch only sends data to the specific port for that device's MAC address, making switches safer. 3. A bridge connects two local area networks that use the same protocol, allowing them to function as a single LAN. 4. gateway 5. A network interface card (NIC) allows a device to connect to the internet. It is usually built into the device's hardware.

Network devices

and their uses

Modems
• Modem stands for Modulator Demodulator.
• Modems allow computers to connect to
networks in long distances over telephone
lines.
• It modulates a computer’s digital signal into
analogue signal for transmission over
telephone lines.
• It can also demodulate ( do the reverse ), to
allow the computer to process the data.
• Modern broadband or ADSL (Asymmetrical
Digital Subscriber Line) modems are faster
than old dial-up modems by using fiber-optic
cables.(Fiber-optic cables transmit data via
fast-traveling pulses of light.)
• The ADSL can control internet traffic over
telephone lines as it uses wide bandwidth
signal, i.e., it uses different frequencies to
transmit internet signals and it doesn’t interfere
with normal telephone traffic.
Hubs

•Hubs are hardware devices that can

have a number of computers
connected to them.
•They carry data packets( the data
being transmitted ) received from one
of its ports and transport it to all the
computers in the network (as they
are connected in a star network).
•It is not a safe method of data
distribution.
Switches

•They are similar to hubs except that

their data distribution is safer.
•All devices have a unique media
access control (MAC) address, a
switch checks the data packet
received and transports it to only the
specific MAC address that is given on
the packet.
Bridge

•A bridge is a device that

connects 2 local area networks,
working on the same protocol,
together so that they can
function as a single LAN.
•It has a single input and single
output port, thus making it a 2-
port device.
Router

•A router is a device like a switch that

routes data packets based on their IP
(internet protocol) addresses.
• Routers normally connect LANs and
WANs together.
•They have an internet cable plugged
into it and several other cables
connecting to computers and other
devices on the LAN.
Gateway

•A gateway is a hardware device that
acts as a "gate" between two
networks.
•If a network node needs to
communicate outside its network, it
needs to use a gateway.
•It may be a router, firewall or
other device that enables traffic to
flow in and out of the network.
Network interface card(NIC)
• A network interface card is required for a device to connect to
the internet.
• It is usually inbuilt on the device hardware.

Network cables
Many computers use Wi-fi, but network
cables are still used as:
• They have faster data transfer
• They can be more secure than wireless
networks.
• What does MODEM stand for?
• How is a hub different from a
switch?
• What does a bridge do?
• Complete the sentence: If a
Quiz network node needs to
communicate outside its network, it
needs to use a ________.
• What is NIC? What does it do?
