Food Monitoring and Controlling System Using Internet of Things

This document presents a food monitoring and controlling system using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. A group of students designed a system to control and monitor key food quality parameters such as temperature, humidity, and weight. An Arduino board interfaces with sensors to measure these parameters and notify users via IoT if the food is outside the optimal range. The system aims to prevent food from rotting or decaying by monitoring environmental factors and controlling them if needed through methods like refrigeration. It was presented under the guidance of an assistant professor with the goal of developing an IoT-based solution to help maintain food quality.

ABSTRACT
The Quality of the food needs to be monitored and it must be
prevented from rotting and decaying by the atmospheric factors like
temperature, humidity and dark. Therefore, it is useful to deploy quality
monitoring devices at food stores. These quality monitoring devices keep
a watch on the environmental factors that cause or pace up decay of the
food. Later, the environmental factors can be controlled ,like by
refrigeration, vacuum storage etc.
A system is designed which controls and monitors the quality and
quantity parameters such as temperature, humidity and weight. The
controlling unit is hinge on the databases of optimum parametric values
for various raw food materials. IoT technology is used to notifies to the
user about the intended parameters of the food continuously.
INTRODUCTION
 A food contamination can occur in the production process, but also a
large part caused by the inefficient food handling because of
inappropriate ambient conditions when the food is being transported
and stored .
 There are many factors leading to food poisoning, typically changes in
temperature and humidity are important factors. So the monitoring
system capable of measuring temperature and humidity variability
during transport and storage is of prime importance .
 This monitoring system uses the storage units that are embedded with
various Arduino based sensors that will read the parameters that are
affecting the quality of the food items.
LITERATURE SURVEY
 Food is spoiled due to many reasons like change in the Temperature and
humidity values, light and dark conditions etc.

 Food Monitoring is done to know the changes in values of Temperature,

humidity by Using sensors and it can be displayed on LCD display.

 By monitoring food, the person should always look after it. To overcome this a
buzzer is placed to give an alert.

 The controlling system is used to overcome the food spoilage for few days by
using  sensors and Peltier modules.
LITERATURE SURVEY
 Paper-1:Monitoringof Microbial Canned Food Spoilage
and Contamination Based on E-nose for Smart Home.
 Paper-2:Food Quality Monitoring System by
Using Arduino.
 Paper-3: Food Quality Detection and Monitoring
System.
PAPER-1

 Title: Monitoring of Microbial Canned Food Spoilage and Contamination

Based on E-nose for Smart Home.
 Description: In this paper, we have developed an electronic nose (e-nose)
consisting of four gas sensors based on functionalized single-walled carbon
nanotubes (f-SWNTs) and polymer nanocomposites, aiming to be a convenient
monitoring device for microbial spoilage and contaminants in canned food.
 Drawbacks: This system doesn't respond until the food gets spoiled.
PAPER-2
 Title: Food Quality Detection and Monitoring System.
 Description: Food plays a very important role in our day to day life. With
an increase in globalization quality of food decreases day by day. In most of
the time various food processing is done to keep the food fresh. The
proposed system gives information about the contaminated contents present
in the food. This system is developed for the people so that they can identify
the quality of food. The sensors like the PH sensor, gas sensor, temperature
sensor are interfaced with ATMEGA 328P microcontroller and the obtained
value is displayed on the LCD screen.
 Drawbacks: In this paper, the system only monitors whether the food is
spoiled or not. This system doesn't prevent the food to spoil.
PAPER-3

 Title: Food Quality Monitoring System by Using Arduino.
 Description:  Food Quality Monitoring System is useful to deploy quality monitoring
devices at food stores. These quality monitoring devices keep a watch on the
environmental factor that cause or pace up decay of the food. Later, the environmental
factors can be controlled like by refrigeration, vacuum storage etc. In this paper, a
similar food quality monitoring device will be designed that will keep watch of
environmental factors like temperature, humidity, alcohol content and exposure to light.
The device is built on Arduino UNO which is a popular prototyping board. The Arduino
board is interfaced with various sensors like DHT-11 to monitor temperature and
humidity, MQ6 to detect alcohol content and LDR to measure exposure to light. This is
an IoT device and sends the measured sensor data to an IoT platform. The ESP8266 Wi-
Fi Modem is interfaced with the Arduino to connect it to the internet via Wi-Fi router.
 Drawbacks: It doesn't support Cloud to maintain the data.
         EXISTING SYSTEM
 The system gives information about the contaminated contents present in
the food. This system is developed for the people so that they can identify
the quality of food.

 In this system, the food spoilage is detected by using Temperature sensor,

Odour sensor,pH sensor.

 If there is any change in temperature or smell then the device detects and
displays on LCD display and also a buzzer is placed which is helped by
the blind people to detect spoilage.
Proposed system

 The Quality of food needs to be monitored and it must be prevented

from rotting and by the atmospheric factors like temperature, humidity
and dark.

 In this project, a similar food quality monitoring and controlling device

will be designed that will keep watch of environmental factors like
temperature, humidity, alcohol content and exposure to light. The device
is built on Arduino UNO which is a popular prototyping board. With the
help of using Web Application and Cloud we can Monitor and Control
the Food from the spoilage.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
COMPONENTS USED
 DHT-11 Sensor – DHT-11 is a temperature and
humidity sensor. The DHT11 sensor consists of two
main components – one is Humidity sensing
component and other is NTC temperature sensor (or
Thermistor).

 Load cell –A load cell is a force transducer. It

converts a force such as tension, compression,
pressure, or torque into an electrical signal that
can be measured and standardized. As the force
applied to the load cell increases, the electrical
signal changes proportionally.
 Arduino Nano – The Arduino Nano is a small, complete,
and breadboard-friendly board based on the ATmega328
(Arduino Nano 3.x). It has more or less the same
functionality of the Arduino Duemilanove, but in a
different package. It lacks only a DC power jack, and
works with a Mini-B USB cable instead of a standard
one.

Ø Node MCU- Node MCU is a low-cost open

source IoT platform. It initially included firmware which
runs on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi SoC from Espressif Systems,
and hardware which was based on the ESP-12 module.
Later, support for the ESP32 32-bit MCU was added.
 ESP866WIFI- The ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module is a self contained
SOC with integrated TCP/IP protocol stack that can access to a
Wi-Fi network. The ESP8266 is capable of either hosting an
application or off loading all Wi-Fi networking functions from
another application processor. Each ESP8266 module comes
pre-programmed with an AT command set firmware.

Peltier module - Thermoelectric cooling uses the Peltier effect to

create a heat flux at the junction of two different types of materials.
A Peltier cooler,heater, thermoelectric heat pump is a solid-state
active heat pump which transfers heat from one side of the device
to the other, with consumption of electrical energy, depending
on the direction of the current.
 Power Supply –  The circuit operates on 5V DC.
The AC mains is used as the primary source of
power. The supply from the mains is stepped
down by a transformer and rectified by a full-
bridge rectifier.
ADVANTAGES
 Save fruits and vegetables for longer time.
 Maintain hygiene and clean environment.
 Save data into cloud for future analysis.
 Reduce the commercial loss.
 Increase commercial profit.
