Rectangular Coordinate System

The document discusses linear equations in two variables and the rectangular coordinate system. It defines a Cartesian plane as composed of two perpendicular number lines that intersect at the origin (0,0) and divide the plane into four quadrants. Each point in the coordinate system is defined by an ordered pair (x,y) representing the x- and y-coordinates. The sign of the coordinates determines which quadrant the point lies in. The document provides examples of identifying coordinates and quadrants for various objects.

OBJECTIVES:
Define a Cartesian plane.
Identify the quadrant/axis does a
point lie based on the sign of the
coordinates.

1. What are the parts/composition of a number line?

2. Where is zero in the number line?
3. What integers can be seen on the left side of zero? What
about on the right of zero?
RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM
 It is also known as xy plane or Cartesian
Plane in honor of the French
Mathematician Rene Descartes (1596-
1650), who is known as the “Father of
Modern Mathematics”.
 It is composed of two perpendicular
number lines that meet at the point of
origin (0,0) and divide the plane into
four regions called quadrants.
RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM
 It is composed of infinitely many points. Each
point in the coordinate system is defined by
an ordered pair of form (x,y).
 The first coordinate of a point is called the x-
coordinate or the abscissa.
 The second coordinate of a point is called
the y- coordinate or the ordinate.

 The sign of the first and second
coordinates of point vary in the four
quadrants as indicated below:
 Quadrant I ( + , +)
 Quadrant II (-,+)
 Quadrant III (-,-)
 Quadrant IV ( + , -)
 There are also point which lie in x- and y-
axes. The points which lie in the x-axis have
coordinates (x,0) and the points which lie in
the y- axis have coordinates (0,y), where x
and y real numbers.
