Smart Parking

This document describes a proposed smart vehicle parking system using Internet of Things (IoT) and Raspberry Pi. The system uses IR sensors to detect available parking spots and sends this data to a Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi then updates an online dashboard through Adafruit IO. Based on available spots, the Raspberry Pi will signal a motor driver to open or close the entrance gate, allowing optimized parking and reduced traffic and pollution. The system aims to provide a low-cost, sustainable parking management solution.

INTRODUCTION
 The recent growth in economy and due to the availability of low
price cars in the market, an every average middle-class
individual can afford a car, which is good thing, however the
consequences of heavy traffic jams, pollution, less availability of
roads and spot to drive the motor car.
 One of the important concerns, which is to be taken in
accounting, is that problem of parking those vehicles.
 The space for parking of the vehicle are available but so much
time is squandered in finding that exact parking slot resulting in
more fuel intake, more time and not also environment friendly.
 It will be great deal if in some way we find out that the parking
itself can provide the precise vacant position of parking slot then
it'll be helpful not limited to the drivers also for the environment.
OBJECTIVES
 We proposed an automated system where the parking ground
will only open if it has free slots for parking.
 The user can also check it before arriving there by a website. It
will save the time as well as reduce the gathering in front of
parking area.
 This system is cost limited and can be easily implemented near
shopping malls and movie theatres.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
COMPONENTS USED
 Raspberry pi 3 B+
 IR sensor

 Motor Driver module

 DC Motor

 16 x 2 LCD
RASPBERRY PI
 Raspberry Pi is a small sized single board computer which is
capable of doing the entire job that an average desktop
computer does like spread sheets, Word processing, Internet,
Programming, Games etc.
 It contain 1GB RAM, 2 USB,

ARM V8 Processor and an

Ethernet port, HDMI & RCA
ports for display,3.5mm
Audio jack, SD card slot
(bootable), General purpose
I/O pins, runs on 5v.
IR SENSOR
 IR sensor is an electronic device, that emits the light in order to
sense some object of the surroundings.
 The wavelengths of IR sensors are700 nm to 1400 nm.

 An IR sensor can measure the heat of an object as well as

detects the motion.
 The Transmitter (Tx) transmits IR rays and Receiver (Rx)
receives reflected IR rays
 If the Rx voltage is more than

threshold voltage then output

value will be logic ‘0’
or vice-versa
MOTOR DRIVER
 The L293D IC receives signals from the microprocessor and
transmits the relative signal to the motors.
 It has two voltage pins, one of which is used to draw current for
the working of the L293D and the other is used to apply voltage
to the motors. The L293D switches it output signal according to
the input received from the microprocessor.
 The L293D is a 16 pin IC, with

eight pins, on each side,

dedicated to the controlling
of a motor.
There are 2 INPUT pins, 2 OUTPUT pins
and 1 ENABLE pin for each motor.
DC MOTOR
 The DC motor is the motor which converts the direct current
into the mechanical work. It works on the principle of Lorentz
Law, which states that “the current carrying conductor placed
in a magnetic and electric field experience a force”. And that
force is the Lorentz force.
 A DC motor is an electrical machine which converts electrical
energy into mechanical energy. The basic working principle of
the DC motor is that whenever a current carrying conductor
places
in the magnetic field, it
experiences a mechanical force.
16X2 LCD
 An LCD is an electronic display module that uses liquid crystal
to produce a visible image. The 16×2 LCD display is a very
basic module commonly used in DIYs and circuits. The
16×2 translates o a display 16 characters per line in 2 such
lines. In this LCD each character is displayed in a 5×7 pixel
matrix.
ADAFRUIT IO
 Display the project data in real-time, online.
 Make the project internet-connected: Control motors, read
sensor data, and more!
 Connect projects to web services like Twitter, RSS feeds,
weather services, etc.
 Connect the project to other internet-enabled devices.
 The best part? All of the above is do-able for free with Adafruit
IO.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 The IR sensors will be placed in the parking slots that will
encounter the presence of the cars inside the parking slots.
 When raspberry pi acknowledges that there is an empty slot or
more then it will send signal to the IO Adafruit where the data is
updated through internet.
 Depending on empty slots the dc servo motor which will open
the main entrance.
 On the other hand if raspberry pi encounter no empty slots at the
time of a car trying to make entrance, the gate will just not open

ADVANTAGES
 Optimized parking.
 Reduced traffic.

 Reduced pollution.

 Enhanced User Experience.

 Increased Safety.

 Decreased Management Costs.

CONCLUSION
 Smart parking project found that this system can be introduced
in our country and it will be beneficiary in the context of our
country.
 The main benefits are time and fuel saving. It can also provide
sustainable parking management in an eco-friendly manner.
 There is less maintenance cost for this system so it is helps the
property developer in cost saving. It provides security to the
parking ground.
