Electric Vehicles

• Introduction
• Battery Management System
• Fast EV charging
• Is India ready for EV

Electric Vehicles
The three main components of an EV
1. Electric Motor
2. Controller
3. Battery

Limitations Advantages
• Heavy Weight • No exhaust (no
• Short Trip Range greenhouse gases ,carbon
• Long Charging Time dioxide , Nox and PM10)
• Poor durability of battery • No Oil consumption
• Rechargeable
• Cheaper Maintenance

BEVs use batteries like
1. Lithium-Ion
2. Lead-acid and NiMH battery
3. Zebra
4. Flow Batteries etc…

Why Batteries!!!????? Are important

 Range of the vehicles depends almost entirely on HV battery.
 It is heaviest electrical component.(25% of total weight)
 It is also most expensive component.

Electric Vehicles 4
Some Facts About Batteries
The weight of batteries of higher capacity (60-100 kWh) for electric
automobiles is in the range of 385-544 kg, while the gross weight of the
automobiles is in the range of 2050-3070 kg
Luxury class electric automobiles with a high basic weight, e.g., Tesla
Model S (85),demonstrated the highest energy consumption per km
travelled – 200 Wh·km-1.
Batteries used in Tesla
"The battery that Tesla has been using, sourced from Panasonic. for its Model
S electric car is most likely lithium-ion with a cathode that is a combination of
lithium, nickel, cobalt and aluminum oxide. The battery industry calls this an
NGA battery, and it has been around and made by Panasonic for many years
now."
"Typically, lithium-ion NGA batteries use a combination of 80 per cent nickel,
15 per cent cobalt and five per cent aluminum. It is unclear what mix Tesla
and Panasonic's battery combination is. (Anodes in these traditional lithium-
ion batteries are usually a graphite combination, which acts as a host for
lithium-ions.) Addition of aluminium to NGA batteries makes them more
stable."

BMS in an EV comprises:
• Multiple types of sensors, actuators and controllers.
• Its acts as communication part between Electronic Control
Unit(ECU) and Battery Pack and controller area network(CAN).

Functions of BMS:
• Protect every cell, Performance of a lithium-ion battery varies
with age, hysteresis and temperature variations. To prevent this ,
cell balancing and thermal management are essential)
• Energy Management , this includes State of available
power(SOP), State of Charge (SOC), and State of Health (SOH)
estimation.
• Battery swapping.

2.Fast EV Charging
For Efficient charging solutions for electric vehicles charging stations ,
Powerful DC chargers are currently the answer.

On September edition Of Electrical India Magazine,

Infineon Technologies of India made an article on Evs Fast Charging,
It states it brings energy-efficient DC fast charging designs to life. If
CoolMOS and CoolSiC MOSFETs are ideal in a wide range of DC EV
fast charging designs

Their Advantages include For Power range above 50kW

Infineon’s are using
• High Frequency operation • CoolSic Easy Module
•IGBT EconoPACK
• High power density •IGBT EconoDUAL

• Reduced switching losses

These allow us to reach high levels of efficiency in any
battery charging system

3.Is India Ready for EV

Indian Government is encouraging commercial deployment of battery electric

vehicles through the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and
Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) scheme.

Global EV market is setting target by Electric Vehicle Initiative(EVI) of global

deployment of 20 million EVs by 2020, EVs in India are beginning to traction.

Indian Governments ambitious plan is to introduce 6-7 million EVs by 2022.

12 states have also introduced separate electricity tariff for EV charging.

Ministry of power too has taken cognizance of the need for public charging
infrastructure and released a forward-looking policy 14 December 2018.

Electric Vehicles 11
Conclusion

 With the growing sales of EVs, automobile manufacturers plan

to extend their BMS production capacities. To achieve better
performance of BMS , there is a need for more research in the
natural environment where effects of different weather
conditions can be checked.
 Improve the three main primary concerns in DC fast charger
architecture are how to minimize the cooling effect, deliver high
power density , and reduce overall system size.
 India has the right talent, a promising consumer base that is
pro-clean mobility and now the rightly demonstrated regulatory
commitment- a concoction that will drive the industry to solve
specific mobility needs that are best solved by EVs
