Methods, Standard & Work Design

The document discusses methods, standards, and work design which are fundamental tools that increase productivity. Specifically, it discusses: 1) Methods engineering includes designing manufacturing processes, tools, and skills to efficiently produce products. Standards are then set based on the best methods. 2) A systematic procedure is outlined to develop work centers including analyzing data, designing ideal methods, installing methods, establishing time standards, and following up. 3) If methods, standards, and work design are effectively implemented, they are the key to a production group's success by producing quality products on time and at low cost.

METHODS, STANDARD &

WORK DESIGN
METHODS, STANDARD & WORK DESIGN

• The Fundamental tools that result in increased productivity:

Methods, time study standards (frequently referred to as work
measurement) and work design.
• the production area within manufacturing industries utilizes the
greatest number of engineers in methods, standards, and work design
efforts.
•  If the production department is considered the heart of an industrial
enterprise, the methods, standards, and work design activity is the
heart of the production group. This area of an industry is the key to
success
METHODS, STANDARD & WORK DESIGN
The objective of the
• Manufacturing manager is to produce a quality product, on schedule, at the
lowest possible cost, with a minimum of capital investment and a maximum of
employee satisfaction.
• Reliability and Quality Manager is to maintain specification and satisfy
customers with the product’s quality level and reliability over its expected life.
• Production control manager is principally interested in establishing and
maintain production schedules with due regard for both customer needs and
the favorable economics obtainable with careful scheduling.
• The maintenance manager is primarily concerned with minimizing downtime
due to unscheduled breakdown and repair

the operation of enterprise
Methods and Standard Scope
• Methods Engineering includes designing, creating, and
selecting the best manufacturing methods, processes, tools,
equipment, and skills to manufacture that have been developed
by the product engineering section.
• When the best method interfaces with the best skills
available, an efficient worker-machine relationship exists.
• Once the complete method has been established, a standard
time for the product must be determined.
Methods and Standard Scope
Furthermore, there is a responsibility to see that
• Predetermined standard times are met
• Workers are adequately compensated for their output, skills,
responsibilities and experiences
• Workers have a feeling of satisfaction from the work that they
do.
Opportunities for savings through the applications of methods engineering
and time study
Methods engineering
• It is a technique for productivity improvement
• It entails analysis at different times during the life cycle of the product.
Methods engineer is responsible for designing and developing the
various work centers where product will be produced;
The engineer must continually restudy the work centers to find a better
way to produce the product and/or improve its quality.
• It is the systematic close scrutiny of all direct and indirect operations to
find improvements that will make work easier to perform, in terms of
worker health and safety, and also allow work to be done in less time
with less investment per unit
Systematic Procedure to Develop Work Centers, Produce a
Product or Provide a Service
1. Select the project.
• New products or existing product with high manufacture cost and low profit
• Products that are currently experiencing difficulties in maintaining quality
and problems meeting competition.
2. Get and present data
• Drawings and specifications
• Quantity requirements
• Projection of anticipated life of product or service
Present Data
• Record in an orderly form for study and analysis

Product or Provide a Service
3. Analyze the data.
• Primary approaches include: Purpose of operation, design of part, tolerances
and specifications, materials, processes of manufacture, set-up and tools.
4. Develop the ideal method.
• Select the best procedure for each operation, inspection and
transportation, including productivity, ergonomics, and health and
safety implications.
5. Present and install the method
• Explain the proposed method in detail to those responsibilities for operation
and maintenance.
• Ensure that the proposed method will provide the results anticipated.

Product or Provide a Service
6. Develop a job evaluation
• Conduct a job analysis of the installed method to ensure that the operators
are adequately selected, trained and rewarded.
7. Establish time standards
• Establish a fair and equitable standard for the installed method.
8. Follow up the method
• At regular intervals, audit the installed method to determine if the
anticipated productivity and quality are being realized, whether costs were
correctly projected and whether further improvements can be made.
