Biometric Es

Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on physiological or behavioral characteristics like fingerprints, face recognition, DNA, iris recognition, and retina. Biometrics technologies measure vital statistics to determine identity. The word biometrics comes from the Greek words for life and measurement. Some early uses of biometrics include Babylonian clay tablets with fingerprints from 500 BC and the first fingerprint classification method developed in 1892. Biometrics can be physical like fingerprints or behavioral like signatures and keystrokes. Common biometric devices include iris scanners, fingerprint scanners, face cameras, and retinal scanners. Biometrics have applications in timekeeping, security access, and replacing passwords.

DEPARTMENT
OF
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING
INTRODUCTION
• Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on
a physiological or behavioral characteristic.
• Which includes fingerprint, palm veins, face recognition, DNA, palm
print, hand geometry, iris recognition, retina.
• This method of identification is preferred over traditional methods
involving passwords and pin numbers for various reasons.
• Biometrics technologies measure a particular set of a person's vital
statistics in order to determine identity.
What is biometric?
• The word "biometrics" is derived from the Greek words 'bios' and
'metric';
• Which means life and measurement respectively.
• This directly translates into "life measurement".
HISTORY
•  There is also evidence that fingerprints were used as a person’s mark
as early as 500 B.C. “Babylonian business transactions are recorded in
clay tablets that include fingerprints.”
• The first real biometric system was created in 1870 by French
anthropologist Alphonse Bertillon and turned biometrics a
distinguished field of study.
• The first classification method for fingerprints was developed in 1892
by Sir. Francis Galton.
Types of Biometrics

• Behavioral Biometrics- Used for verification .

• Physical Biometrics- Used for either identification or verification.

Behavioral Biometrics

• Speaker Recognition
• Signature
• Keystroke
Physical Biometrics
• Fingerprint.
• Facial Recognition.
• Hand.
• Iris recognition.
• Vascular Patterns.
Characteristics of Biometric
Biometric Devices
• Iris Scanner.
• Fingerprint Scanner.
• Face Camera.
• Retinal Scanning.
• DNA Matching.

Applications
• Biometric Time Clocks or Biometric time and attendance systems,
which are being increasingly used in various organizations to control
employee timekeeping.
• Biometric safes and biometric locks, provides security to the
homeowners.
• Biometric access control systems, providing strong security at
entrances.
Advantages
• Increase security -Provide a convenient and low-cost additional tier of
security.
• Reduce password administration costs.
• Replace hard-to-remember passwords which may be shared or
observed.
• Unequivocally link an individual to a transaction or event.
