Here are the steps to solve the problem: 1. What is asked: The distance traveled by Ken 2. Given: Speed = 60 km/h, Time = 2 hours 3. Let d = distance 4. Use the formula: Distance = Speed x Time d = 60 km/h x 2 hours d = 120 km Therefore, the distance traveled by Ken is 120 km. 2. Mary cycled at an average speed of 30 km/h for 4 hours. How far did she travel? 3. A bus traveled from Manila to Baguio, a distance of 320 km. If the bus traveled at an average speed of 80 km/h, how long did

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
I. State the formula in finding the speed, distance and time;
II. Identify the speed, distance and time in the given
problem;
III. Solve each problem involving speed, distance and time.
MATHEMATICS
(Speed, distance and time)
Lets us analyze and solve this problem.

Mr. Cruz went to the

province. He drove for
2 hours travelling at an
average speed of 80
kilometers per hour.
How far did he travel to
reach the province?
How far did he travel to reach the
province?
 How do you solve this problem?

 Analyze this problem by using

the following guide questions.
Following guide question
1.What is asked in the problem?
 The distance that Mr. Cruz travelled.

2. What are given in this problem?

 2 hours which refers to the time,
 80 kilometer per hour(the average
speed)
3. Represent the unknown, using variable.
 Since you are asked to find the distance
that Mr. Cruz traveled, let the variable d
represent the distance traveled.
 d – the distance traveled in kilometer.
Definition of Speed
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an
object can move”
Speed can be thought of as the rate by which an object
covers distance.
A car travelled Manila to
Baguio at the speed of 80
kilometer per hour.

SPEED = 80 KILOMETER PER HOUR

5. The equation d = s x t describes the problem.
6. Solve the equation.
d=sxt
= 80 km x 2 hours
hours
= 160 km
Mr. Cruz traveled 160 km to reach the province
Definition of Average Speed
Average Speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a
given period of time; it is sometimes referred to as the ratio
of distance and time.
Average Speed = Distance
time

Mr. Carzon drove for 5 hours

Average Speed= ?
travelling at an average
Distance = 243 kilometers
speed of 243 kilometers per
Time = 5 hours
hour from Manila to Baguio
Definition of Distance and Time
Distance is the total length between two positions.
Time is the quantity measured or measurable
period during which an action, process, or
condition or continues.
The equation for speed can be remembered from the unit
itself: m/s – m is meter(distance), s is second(time). It can, of
course, be arranged to give”:

Time = distanceand distance = speed x time

speed
SPEED, DISTANCE AND TIME
FORMULA
The relationship between speed, distance and time can
be expressed in the following equations:
a. Speed = distance or S= d
time t
b. Distance = Speed x Time or D= S x T

c. Time = distance or S= D
speed S
The following table list units in common use for
speed and their abbreviations.
Distance Time Speed Abbreviation
Miles(m) Hours(h) Miles per hour mph
Kilometers(km) Hours(h) Kilometer per hour Km/h or kph
Meters(m) Seconds(sec) Meters per second m/s
Feet(ft) Seconds(sec) Feet per second f.p.s or ft.per sec.
or ft./sec
Centimeters Seconds(sec) Centimeter per cm/sec or cm/s
(cm) second
4. Next, relate the given information in the
problem to the unknown number of kilometer
by means of an equation.
 There is a relationship that exist among
distance, time and speed.
Formulas can be derived from
Figure 1 D the triangle in Figure 1. In the
figure, d= distance, s= average
S T
speed and t= time.
To find d, multiply the
Figure 1 D average speed and the
time.
S T d= s x t

To find s, divide the To find t, divide the

distance by the time. distance by the average
speed.
s=d t=d
t s
Example 1:
If a car travels 100 kilometers in 2 hours, find the
average speed.
Solution:
Using the average speed formula:

Average Speed = Distance = 100 = 50 kph

Time 2
Answer: The average speed of the car is 50 kph
Take note that the car does not travel at a constant speed of 50
kph but it is the speed varies during the journey
Example 2:
A world – record holder ran 800 meters in 86 seconds.
What was his average speed rounded to the nearest tenth?
Solution:
Using the average speed formula:

Average Speed = Distance = 800 m = 9.3 m/s

Time 86 s

Answer: The average speed of the world – record holder was 9.3 m/s
Example 3:
Wayne’s motorcycle’s average speed on a
motorcycle is 50 km/h. If he drives it for 4 ½ hours,
how far does he travel?

Solution: Using the formula to find the distance:

distance = speed x time
= 50 x 4 1/2
distance = 225 kilometers
Answer: He can travel a distance of 225 kilometers.
