Cofferdam
Definition
A cofferdam is a temporary structure
constructed to divert water in a river, a lake or
a sea or to keep away water from an enclosed
area in order to construct a permanent
structure such as a bridge pier.
It provides a dry work environment.
The inside land or the dry side of the coffer
dam is called Basin side/ Basin
And the outside as a water side
Types of cofferdam
Earth‐Type
Single wall
Braced
Double‐Walled
Cellular
Braced cofferdam
• Formed from a single wall of sheet piles
which are driven into the ground to form a
box around the excavation site.
• The box is then braced on the inside
• Interior water is dewatered
• Primarily used for bridge piers in shallow
water
Cellular cofferdam
• are constructed by driving sheet piles of special
shapes to form a series of cells
• Cells are interconnected to form a series of cells.
• Cells are filled with soil to provide stabilizing force
against lateral pressure
• No internal bracing which would obstruct the
working area
• Basically there are 2 types of cofferdams that are
commonly used
Circular type
Diaphragm type
Cell fill
• It provides weight for stability
• The material used for the cell fill should have the
following properties
The fill should be free draining
It should possess high angle of friction
It should be as dense as possible
It should possess larger resistance to scour
