USES OF THE COMMA
1. After introductory words, phrases, or clauses
Ex.
Finally, the group decided to pool some money and
make a trip to the jungle.
To stay healthy, it’s important to exercise.
Unless you study harder, you will fail the course.
Use commas with appositives
2. Use a comma with appositives
Ex. My best friend, the manager of Dream Travel
Agency, has decided to invest in our company.
Use a comma to avoid run-on
sentences.
3. Twoindependent clauses should be joined by: ,
and - ,but -,or, so, yet.
Ex. The new coach announced his appointment, and the team
decided to go on a strike.
The coach announced his appointment, but no one liked the
decision.
The coach announced his appointment, so the team has good
chances to be ready for the next championship.
The coach announced his appointment, yet no one knows when he
will start working.
Use a comma to separate the
elements in a series.
5. A series has three or more elements.
Ex. Many children love eating ice cream,
candies, and French fries.
Ecuadorians usually travel by bus, by airplane,
by tram, and by boat.
Use a comma to introduce a
quotation.
6. Use commas to introduce quotations
Examples:
He said, "It’s all my fault."
I asked, "don't you believe me?"
