 Networks connects devices

 Devices share information

 To share information, they must speak the same language

 This language is called a protocol


Wide Area Network
Notes

 A SOHO network is small, an enterprise network may be large

 A LAN is a network in a local area

 A WAN connects networks that are separated.

Data is copied to al other ports

Only detects that a device is physically connected


to it

SWITCH

Date will be copied only to the specific port

Can detect specific devices that are connected to it

Keeps a record of the MAC addresses of those


devices
Notes

 Hubs and switches are used to exchange data within a LAN

 Not used to exchange data outside their own network

 To exchange data outside their own network, a device needs to be able to read IP addresses
Firewall Types

Host-based firewall

Software firewall that is installed on a computer

Protects that computer only

Network-based firewall

Combination of hardware and software
